And what happens when family and friends start hitting you up for money? What if they start to distrust you because you will not lend them $10k? What if your gf or wife says that their brother needs money, and gets mad at you because you will not lend it to them. Are you going to be able to handle the stress?
I don't think you guys realize the stress that comes with large sums of money. People get jealous. Good relationships become frayed and they eventually deteriorate.
I was going to post this.
My aunt and uncle hit it rich from a lawsuit a few years ago. They never told us what they received. My guess is 10 million.
At first, when they got the money it was a positive experience. They bought me a new car. They gave my parents $20k They were buying family members things, and they even donated money to charity. My uncle acquired Parkinson's disease, so they donated $10k. They gave the local fire department $8k so they could build a new mess hall.
Dont know what to say about this. I guess my family is different. We dont approach each other with our hands out asking for a donation. No matter how rich I am or how rich I knew a family member is, that is their money and not mine. I wouldn't lose my self respect to go up to them and basically beg for money. I'll send my own kids to the school that works for them, pay my own bills, if my car breaks I'll find a way. That's how you prevent family discord.

Money was flowing. Life was good, but then it got bad. Really bad. Family members were arguing over who should get the next check. My uncle was using the money as leverage. He wanted people to kiss his ass. I believe that if you want to do something you should do it out of your heart, and not to seek favors. His mentality towards lending family members money was nasty. His attitude was I'm giving you this money. What am I going to get in return?
In the end my uncle became paranoid of everyone. He thought people were after his money. He was in his late 70's so maybe dementia played a part. Money tore our family apart. People place too much emphasis on money. They think that if they had money their lives are going to dramatically improve. In the short term having a lot of money is going to improve your life. What about long term? What happens when the new $80k car loses its luster, and the new $500k home that you bought loses it WOW factor. What then?
Title is simple: If you got real rich real quick, what would you do?
First thing I would do is to donate to charity. Not because I want to help anyone, I would want to pay the min taxes possible each year.
Second, play the stock market. I need to invest in something to make sure I have a small-medium river of profit still coming in for that just in case (aka, couch money)
Third, start spending.
There's a property close by I'd like to own. I'd buy that, and give a life time lease($1 per year) to the ballet company that resides there. I'd then start buying adjoining properties, and put them in an agricultural trust. I'd also get a camel.
despite my first smart ass response, ive given this serious thought before. id keep enouigh to live worry free and give the rest away. charities, childrens hospitals, etc. when you have a certain amount of money, as someone stated... it changes things. all the sudden family members appear, the wrong friends appear, certain wrong things start to appear. that type of thing just isnt good for a lot of folks.
be careful of
Give a chunk of your money away so that shit friends and family don't show their true colors?
Maybe I'm just so cynical and jaded that I expect the worst of people. If the wrong friends/family appear, no harm, no foul.
If you hold onto your sudden fortune, you could keep giving and redirect funds, theoretically, to various charities until the end of time.
Invest it, after buying one of these and drive it around freaking people out, stay in the house I have and improve it awhile.
Depends on how rich I'd strike it.
Relax awhile.
I found Iron Sky very amusing, was more entertaining than Pacific Rim or a lot of things these days I thought.
Might have to do that one again, haven't watched it a long time.
