Not as dangerous as it was back in the late 80s, but still pretty dangerous.
East is the land of the Protestant Loyalists headed by the UDP (Ulster Democratic Party). West is the Republican Catholics (IRA). My friend got stabbed at a party on the west side because he said that he used to be Protestant, but has been Catholics for the past 12 years. Still a lot of bad blood in Northern Ireland, but I have had a strange affinity for Belfast.
