What are your wants? Do you want an uber-1337 computer right now for bragging rights? Or do you want an excellent performing computer that you can upgrade for years to come?

For the former, you can get a Dual-Opteron Tyan Thunder board (300-400), 2 Opteron 285 Dual Core processors (about $2000 total and equal to 2 FX-60s), 4GB of nice RAM ($600 or so), 2 7900GTXs in SLi ($1000), and you still have 1k to blow on whatever you want

seriously though, here's what I would get:
Opteron 170 or Athlon FX-60 (Overclock to 3 GHz or above, get latter if you want to OC even higher than that on the unlocked FSB)
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR EXPERT
2GB Low Latency DDR600
2 7900GTXs in SLi
1KW Power supply
1*150GB Raptor+2*500GB 7.2k HDDs
Cooler Master Stacker w/water cooling

And you'd still have a bunch of $$ left over

The High End Tyan mobo with the 8 Optis could need also some high end Corsair XMS RAM modules.
But keep some money aside for some real cool subzero cooling solution, like the Vapor-Phase or the Submersion cooling. And then overclock the CPUs to 100'000Ghz each!!!

The question is what you want? To satisfy your needs, to satiate your system or to feed the satiated industry? If you have nothing concrete in mind and just want to spend $5000, every cent will be a waste, and your 7900GTX will be just an adapter, your Tyan K8QE will be just a mobo and so on.

Do it as the others said too, invest just a part of the money. The industry goes so fast that everything what you would buy now, will be old next year. So upgrade then. Or will you have another $5000 next year too?

dual- and quad- proc systems are largely for servers, altho also used for workstations

Assuming you're ready to upgrade, give a budget and people will give recommendations...which you just did, altho an imaginary one

Get a nice NF4 board, or this board,, or the board I have in my sig, a nice Venice 3000+/3200+, and a GeForce 7900GT (or something else). And a newer HD to boot with. For instance.

Edit, actually is yor proc OC'd? If so, then you could really get away with just upgrading to a faster AGP videocard, /(maybe a faster HDD too)
