For a first car that he'll likely wreck?

I'd go $5K/$25K.

A loaded Cavalier. Keep the rest of the money to buy a 2nd Cavalier when I crash the first like most new drivers.

If someone handed me $30K and said "go buy a car" it would have to be the 350Z. Insurance wouldn't be fun, though.

honestly, buy a crappier used car first. you're gonna get in an accident.

or if you're gonna buy a new car, get a slow one.

if i had a G35c as my first car, i would've been dead in 2 weeks tops.

if you're set on driving a good car, make sure you take it to a REAL driving school, not the dmv license crap.

KrK.... are you responsible for the insurance/gas/tires/upkeep? Will you be in the near future? That can make a BIG BIG difference. Something like the 350Z, while nice, has relatively high insurance premiums, expensive tires, and can be rough on gas (if you're driving hard). Also, I would HIGHLY recommend buying a car that will last you six years--unless you think your parents will turn around and buy you another one halfway through college.

Personally, in your situation (if this is possible), I'd take a Mazda Protege5 (or MP3) and $14K in cash/investments. I promise the money will come in handy later, if that's possible.

That doesn't mean anything. You've been driving in car with your parents. When you're on the road by yourself, it's very different.

Get a 325i, the car that is the benchmark rather than the cars shooting for that benchmark (IS, G35). Of course not getting stick takes some of the fun out of it.

I've been taking driving lessons too, I have at least 20 hrs driving experience just from them

HAHA - driving lessons. Trust me, no body is experienced until they've put at least 10 thousand miles on their first car and have owned it for over a year.

Take it from us, the odds are EXCELLENT that you will wreck your first car.

If your parents can afford to drop $30K on a car for you, odds are they have it in cash.

If you're set on spending the entire $30K on a car, I would do this:

Buy something cheap ($5K Accord or something like it). Put the rest in INGDirect & sit on it.

Comprehensive insurance under your parents' policy shouldn't be too expensive.

If you're still driving the same car a couple years from now, then you might consider selling it, draining your savings account, & buying something better.

No to mention that you aren't actually paying for it. People who get cars for free and people who buy their own (usually) treat their vehicles VERY differently, the one who buys it tends to have more respect for it because it's their hard earned money.

For a first car, get something cheap, reliable, and efficient. Civic/Sentra/Corolla etc.

Sentra SE-R Spec V comes to mind as a nice one. And think about how happy your parents will be when you pick out a car < $20k.

I've gotten more driving experience than that in 2 days before. Ever drive across the country? Oh, wait, you can't do it in 20 hours, so - no.
