I wonder if I'm required to return the defective battery after receiving the replacement. I wouldn't mind holding on to it as a spare for long flights.

That's crazy talk. Unless Dell designed the batteries and Sony manufactured them, it's not Dell's fault.

My 700m's 8 cell battery is a little over a year old and doesn't hold it's charge.

I was going to order a new battery off eBay for $50 + $20 shipping. Dell just saved me $70 and it couldn't have happened at a better time

This time don't leave the battery in it all the time when you have it plugged in. I understand that can greatly shorten the life of the battery. I only put the battery in it when I'm charging it or when I'm using it unplugged.

Yeah, I guess I'm just lazy

Modern batteries don't work that way. Although it won't hurt to baby them so carefully, it shouldn't enhance the lifetime of the battery either.

Go Dell! I just received my replacement battery today. Nice since my old one is almost 2 years old and was more or less completely worthless.

Battery Recall
Order Confirmation

Thank you for placing your Battery Recall Request. Your Request Number is: xxxx

You will receive an email when your Order has been shipped.

Please allow up to 20 business days for delivery.

Note: Replacement batteries for P/N M3006 and H3191 are on extended lead times. Please allow up to 75 business days for delivery.

20 days is bordering on incredulous but 75 business days? Thats what, 3 months? I'd drop $70 rather than wait for 3 months.

Mine took less than a week. I imagine they just want to warn you about the longest possible potential wait. I can't imagine your willingness to spend $70 would mean anything anyway, since they will, for liability reasons, certainly ship recall replacement batteries before they ship retail replacements.

I would but my old battery is all but dead, and I have a universal-bay battery as my backup anyway. I prefer to take advantage of their prepaid return mailer to get rid of the recalled battery.

set your laptop on fire, then tell them you want a new one
Maybe a video will help.

The battery on my D600 gets fairly warm when docked. Not quite incendiary like when it's actually charging, but certainly warmer than room temperature. I thought this still shortened battery life semi-noticeably?

I also remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't leave the battery out for extended periods because of possible "moisture buildup inside the case of the laptop." This sounds like BS, but hell if I know.
