for me, I like Mount Gay Extra Old Rum. It's nice mixed or straight up.

What's a good smooth hard liquor to start with?

Depends what you're looking for....You could always start off with a beer.

Either way, since you don't have adapted taste buds, I guarantee whatever you buy it's going to taste like shit the first time you try it - so your best choice is something cheap. Either something like Jack Daniels for a whiskey taste, or you can trying going more safe with something sweeter like a coconut rum or disaronno (which tastes close to a Dr. Pepper IMO)

Liquors all taste different, it will be a matter of finding out what you're into flavor wise.

I suggest you go to a bar and just get small pours of things to try them out. Everyone is going to have a wildly different opinion of this question and that probably wont be of much use to you.

If you've never been a drinker, you have no idea what you will like and no idea why things taste the way they do, essentially your first drinks if any given alcohol are just to have a sensation to base other tastes off of.

Find a place that does tasting flights and don't assume that because the first taste makes you nearly gag that you don't like it.

Start with beer at least to give your palette a concept of alcohol and fermented drink. Get something not an IPA (those taste like shit anyhow). Try a nice brown ale or a stout or something, nothing goofy flavored. Can do the same thing, find some place that does beer flights.

Depends what you're going to mix it with. Any Canadian whisky should be newbie friendly, they're all pretty mellow.

Why start now? Not being a drinker is a good thing. Much much cheaper in the long run, and if it turns into a bigger habit it could fuck with your health

I got that shit out of the way in college, and now I barely keep anything in the house (even beer). I like it that way

Get out.

That said, try the "normal stuff" first like Jack Daniels Black Label. Only then can you know the real difference (and cost difference) for Blue Label, for example.

Personally I like the 18 year Jameson and Don Julio 1942. I also prefer my drinks neat.

Aardbeg or Talisker.

there's no sensible reason to drink poison, when it tastes like poison. try a real cask strength whisky and you'll see why drinking it actually makes sense.

not implying that either of those is cask strength, but for commercial whisky, they are far better than anything else.

if you have the money, i recommend this: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/ardbeg/ardbeg-corryvreckan-whisky/

worth every penny. or, for you queen-hating traitors, "every cent".

I liked Fireball and Hennessy when I tried them if that tells you anything. I do tend to like sweet drinks when I have them. I'm looking for something really smooth.

I don't really consider myself a regular drinker but do drink occasionally. (crap, isn't that what alcoholics say?) Wine is my goto, I prefer white, but I'll drink red too. Pretty much try different kinds.

My first ever liquor to try was Crown Royal. That was rather interesting considering I had no idea what to expect. After I tried it, we were mostly drinking it mixed, I think with coke, but I can't remember. That was a while back when I graduated from HS. I think I had turned 19 around that time too.

The biggest thing, know your limits. You can enjoy alcohol without getting drunk. I've gotten buzzed but never drunk. When I start to feel good, I know to start slowing down. I could "probably" drink a whole bottle of wine if I paced myself, but I never tried.

Great now I'm thirsty for wine.
