I talking about the original. Since my main PC has died and I'm using a m1710 as my PC now I've been playing some older games that I've never gotten around to. SC is one of them. Due to the ancient gameplay the beginning can come across little harsh, but it washes over you before too much time has past, and clunkiness begins to smooth out.
Man, has modern gaming turned me into an impatient f%$#. Sitting and waiting, learning guards routines, and sneeking around slowly in the shadows really grated on my nerves for a while. I died stupidly on the first building a few times before finally making it through with a bit of health left, and I continued on through the level. A scripted event that had two police officers "interrogating" a suspect took me forever to get past. As I moved on I figured it was best to shoot out as many lights as possible to remain undetected due to my limited health.
I did eventually make it to the final building, picked the lock, and opened the door. It was the entrance to a police station with a long brightly lit by four overhead lamps. I glanced down at my ammo count - of course I only had three bullets left. I spent an evening trying to get past that hallway by any mean necessary, but no - without a way to shoot out that fourth lamp I was stuck. Using my patented "5 save rotation" I had copied over all of the beginning saves. It began to dawn on me that I was going to have to restart. Groan.
So I did, from the very beginning, and this time I moved through the area like an expert. I learned my lessons, got the police station with about 20 bullets left, solved the level, and now I'm looking forward to the rest of the game. It truly is a fun experience.
I think we should all play an older game like this occasionally to keep our bearings.
