Even the sound track is amazing.

Holy shit. I don't watch a movie more than once but this one is an exception. The acting, story, camera, director is amazing. I'm going to watch it for the 3rd time in a couple of days

Heh, good! I picked up the bluray from a recommendation a while ago and still haven't watched it.

Why do they dub other languages onto american films but only offer subtitles on the foreign film American version? Speaking of foreign films.

Because they are a little behind in time. Americans realized how stupid it was to dubbed movies. How comical is it to watch a movie where their lips are still yapping after the dubbed?

Other countries haven't realized this phenomena yet.

Please do not make "New World" into an American Film. I saw the US remake of "Oldboy" and had to stop because it wasn't good.

Not really--it isn't that one style is superior to the other. It is based on preference more than anything. For whatever reason, the preference over here is for subtitles, because the translations--the actual English translation, not the weirdness of sound not matching the lips--was always pretty bad.

Likewise, the Belgians prefer a dubbed translation (I actually met a translator and voice actor over there several years ago, and it's a pretty big thing--translating and dubbing content into French; not sure if they do it in Flemish).

I don't know why, but when some content offers multiple tracks--subtitles with original language or a dubbed track, the translation is actually very different. Check out the older DVD of Crouching Tiger that was released over here. The dubbed track is horrible--it is basically a direct translation of the original mandarin, with strange cultural inferences that make no sense and just sound stupid to a Western audience. The subtitles are an actual translation.

point being: A good translation isn't about directly translating words. It's about matching the language and culture of the target audience. For some audiences, you will see this with the dubbed language tracks. For others, you will get it in the subtitles.

Love these kinds of films. Hard Boiled and The Killer are some of my favourites. Going to check this one out.

The voice usually doesn't match the actor and on top of that, it's usually out of sync with the actor's lips. And it's a lot more costly to hire voice actors to dub a movie as compared to just translate it into text. Dubbing is just dumb altogether. That's why you don't see them dubbing movies anymore since 1990s, just subtitles.

I watched the american version of Oldboy and wanted to throw up. It's so shitty compared to the original.

"The departed" however, I think it's vastly superior to Infernal Affairs in every freaking aspect.

I don't think you grasped what I was saying, at all.

Oh man, I forgot that happened...wasn't it Spike Lee? D:

OK, I like you.

Infernal Affairs was way better, what are you talking about. The two movies focused on different themes. Infernal Affairs felt like a solid HK cop film. The Departed was just an adaptation made for the mainstream US.

Hmm, I don't mind subtitles.

I'll be checking it out, sounds up my alley.

It's new? Hmm.

Ponders things.

+1 to The Departed, BTW.

Saw it, and it sucked ass. Korean gangsters are total amateurs
I guess your definition of gangster is a guy wearing a white Tee and pant is hanging off their kneecap. I like my gangsters to be professional and organized...like wearing suits, having loyalty, know rank structure, do not act without higher authority approval (that scene with LT/Captain Kang at the funeral shows that...)

The departed was good but yeah, watching Infernal Affairs with subtitles - that movie is definitely a better movie. I saw Infernal Affairs before The departed. Just a better flick.
