The fear of staff spitting in your food are baseless in my 4 or so years of experience in the food industry. Any place with a staff that cares about the product they are putting out to the public would not do such a thing. It would take a complete lack of pride in the product to allow someone to do that, and if there is no pride in the product the restaurant is going to be shitty and you're not going to be going there anyway. That's called a Mcdonalds. The places I've worked you'd have been called out by fellow staff and fired if you ever tried to intentionally fuck up the food.

Tips are not required and they would need an aweful lot of them just to get by. I have a huge problem with that whenever I get a favorite place to eat and start to talk with the wait staff. I always feel like they're being abused and it should be a crime.

I admire the fact that you are sympathetic to the plight of waitstaff but generally servers do pretty well. The fact is that they are putting between 15 to 20% of the gross receipts in their pockets for showing up and driving food sales in the restaurant. Thats more than what the average restaurant's profit margin is (usually less than 10%)
I wont argue that most businesses are having a heck of a time staying profitable these days, but I dont think its a good excuse to shaft their people. And I suppose I could be making the problem appear to be worse than it really is.
Once I get to know the staff a little bit they start confiding in me about their problems, not the least of which is their difficulty surviving on shitty tips and rotten salary. Its likely they are just trying to get sympathy but I have no difficulty believing they are hurting for money.

Yep. At McDonalds I was making $10.50 part time. If you're getting $2/hour, it's time to marry some ugly American woman, get your green card, then you can make the big mony at McDonalds. If you're hard core, you can work the night shift which was something like $12. Ironically most of the night shift were immigrants, so you'll have some stiff competition once you get that green card.

Tipping would defeat the purpose of me buying the pizza there and not cook a digiorno, as the tip would put me over the cost of the home baked pizza. Now I'm not trying to be a cheap person or anything, but should I really be tipping when I pick up the pizza myself?

What is the standard protocol on things like this?

i never tip if i pick up anything.

Negative. I feel a slight obligation, but if the service isn't over the top, it ain't happening.

Tip who? The cook?? The guy who sweeps the parking lot???

No, you tip for delivery, because you're helping out the driver who brought you the pizza (and usually works for a small wage + tips). You pick it up yourself, tip yourself.

If they wanted a better paying job they can go work for minimum wage at McDonald's. They choose to do that cus they get paid EXTREMELY WELL. You also have no idea that if they don't make minimum wage on tips the employer is required to pay them the difference to get them minimum wage and seeing as they more than likely won't claim their tips they make a lot of money.

Scenario #2:
You drive to a restaurant to pick up an order. The waiter took your order over the phone, places it with the kitchen, brings your drinks to the counter, sacks your food and silverware and brings it to the counter. This person makes $2.00/hour and deserves no tip.

That's what you guys are saying?

What kind of restaurants are you going to, where the level of service is the same as that of a take out place?

I hate how a lot of places these days simply put out a tip jar, and that means that they are suddenly deserving of a tip? Like my local Quiznos. No dudes, you make my sandwich, I pay you. You don't even pour my drink for me like they do at Wendy's, but guess what, Wendy's pours my drink and they don't have a tip jar! Or they put that tip line on the credit card receipt, which always worries me because at the end of the day, they could be putting an extra dollar on every receipt and no one would ever know. Course that's true for regular restaurants too, I guess.

Yeah I've worked in a couple restaurants, and I don't care how much of a dick a customer is, you just don't mess with people's food. I mean if someone came in right before closing and ordered a well done steak or something like that, we might throw it in the microwave and send them a piece of rubber. But spitting in food is crossing the line.

I've never worked fast food, though. I could understand the mentality of workers at places like that being different.

Actually that does make a lot of sense. If I had a kid, I'd be willing to give him $5 to go pickup the food. He can even use my ghetto car, but if he crashes it, I get my $5 back.

Fuck no!!! The ONLY time I tip for pickup is sushi...because the guys who make sushi are skilled and I can respect that so they deserve a little something IMO. My wife never tips our local sushi places when we order take out though.

There is no way I'd ever tip for picking up a pizza though...what's next, tipping the douchebag at the McDonalds drive through?

As stated by zerocool84, the law says if a server doesn't get enough tips to equal minimum wage the business has to make up the difference. I'm sure most businesses wouldn't have any workers if the net pay didn't meet minimum wage.

I do because I worked in a pizza shop for years. The regulars all tipped a buck or two when they picked it up, but it wasn't just like a pan-pizza shop. We did everything by hand and it was usually the same 3 of us working all the time. If there's a tip jar, it can really make someone's day when you show appreciation in a hard job. I had to often do register, phone, and make pizzas or sandwiches. At the end of the day, $10-20 extra in their pockets from their minimum wage job makes all the difference. I was there.

Nope, just calling out a cheap ass loser and not the one that lives at home with mommy. I'm guessing the few times you go out to eat, you don't tip either.
