Nah, won't happen. Besides, courts are now ruling that an IP address is not a person.

Also, in order to get my internet service back, I had to agree to "secure my router and speak with the people in my home" to make sure it doesn't happen again.

What they are trying to do is be able to show a court that they warned me, so if it happens again, the "open router" excuse might not hold up.

good.

hadn't seen that the courts are not ruling that IP is not a person. about damn time. i figured it was one of those "duh" items. but with the courts you never know.

I had my router open. then noticed the traffic was far fucking higher then i used. the neighbor's were on it all the fucking time.

Yea it is just one federal ruling, but it bodes well for the future.

"And, now a U.S. District Court has ruled that an IP address is not the same thing as a person's identification.

This current decision came about because of a recent wave of copyright owners filing approximately 100,000 lawsuits against file sharers based on their IP addresses."

hopefully that will stop the "john doe" lawsuits.

frankly if they don't have proof they shouldn't file a lawsuit. some of the MPAA tactics i think should be illegal.

oh and NO i don't pirate movies or music.

I leave my router open.
Every time I try to set up security it hoses something up and I have to reset the router.
I finally gave up.

Isn't that semantics? I mean the RIAA put out a lot of Don't Steal commercials using celebs.

Repeating something multiple times doesn't make it true. Copyright infringement is completely different from theft, and there's degrees of copyright infringement. Lumping everything under one banner is disingenuous, and nonproductive.

Have you paid for it?
The definition of theft actually has nothing to do with money being exchanged. The value of the item TAKEN (key word) determines whether it is petty or grand theft, but not whether it is theft.

Are you using it?
Also immaterial for theft. You don't actually have to use the item you stole, you just have to TAKE it without permission, and DEPRIVE the rightful owner of its use. Downloading music fails to meet the definition of theft by both these metrics.

Do you have permission to use it without paying for it?
Part of the definition of theft is the lack of permission, true, but that's a much bigger part of the definition of copyright infringement. Given that downloading music fails the other definitions of theft, it's solidly in the realm of copyright infringement. But don't take my word for it, look up Dowling v. United States and see that the Supreme Court agrees with me.

Now here is the interesting question: If you download music, and RIAA sues you for $1,000,000, can you countersue them for false advertising for their "piracy is stealing" ads, which gave you the impression that you would be facing a much smaller fine if caught?

these make the best internet arguments. I love how diverse of a forum this is, i still dont have a real opinion on this subject. I just know that i dont want to live in a country where people get put in prison for pirating movies or games while there a real crimes out there like child pedos and murderers.

I disable my GPS most of the day.

Also:

Your cellular radio is on isn't it? Your location is triangulated to a relatively accurate location just based on timing data from the towers whether you have full (sky) GPS on or off.

Only way you're not trackable via cell is to not have a cell (or at the very least powered off and the battery pulled). Not trying to tin-foil hat this one, cause I honestly don't care. It's simply the truth.

Don't forget Obama packed the Department of Justice with RIAA lawyers. The FBI and Homeland Security work for the MPAA/RIAA now.

I torrented a copy of Sims 3 just a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I own a legit license for the game and can't find the DVD so there was nothing wrong with doing that.
