In the near term, it will be something to haul lumber and stuff in that I can't fit in my car. In a few years, I'm going to ditch my sedan for a sports car and it will also serve as my winter commuter vehicle. I'm going with a diesel for the better gas mileage.

In that case you may not need to be as concerned over something like a heavy duty tranny. Since it's a commuter, what about just general comfort?

Speaking from experiance go with the Duramax,I have worked on way too many Cummins diesels to recommend them to anyone, common problems include a no start situation because the oil was not changed per the required 3,000 mile interval (The injectors on these engines are powered by a 2,300 lb oil pump in the oil pan,if the oil get's too thin or contaminated, the injectors will not open),injectors leaking, rough idle caused by imbalanced injectors, hard starting in cold weather, drive by wire system failures, glow plug relay failures, glow plug failures and transmission overheating during long trips (this aplies to the Ford trucks only).
Yes the Duramax has aluminum heads but I have yet to see a reported blown headgasket or cracked cyclinder head yet,in fact the only Duramax that has come into the shop had water in it's fuel. The Allison transmission that's mated to the Duramax is very heavy duty while the other trannies from dodge and Ford are stnadard duty (no failures yet).
The only thing I dislike is Chevy's body style and chevy is not up to speed in the quality control department as Ford is,please don't get me started with Dodge qaulity control .

Ford went to Cummins years ago to design Ford's new diesel engine the Powerstroke, they are manufactured by Ford but designed by Cummins in cooperation with Ford
Recently I had to swap out a couple of leaking valve cover gaskets on a 1996 7.3L Powerstroke, the gaskets on these engines have the wiring harness for the injectors built into them, the gaskets cost almost $275.
Paragrah,what's that ?

Not sure I understand your question.
Why do you say that? I forgot why he said he rebuilt it then, but the damn thing is still running and fuel consumption hasn't gone up nor does it burn oil. I stand by my recommendation.Originally posted by: drnickriviera

Uhh being rebuilt at 200k isn't a good thing.
I have a ram 2500. Engine is good, weak tranny, poor build quality. Whatever you get, i'd look for a direct injected one.
That's what I thought as well. This truck has been all over CA to Idaho and Arizona, runs great and aside from a hose problem a few years ago, has been more reliable than he is!Originally posted by: BadNewsBears
Alien craft. Older fords are fine. The 6.0 is a worthless pos.
00-02? quad qab diesel ram, install an oversize tranny cooler, and gauges, and go to town.
Built trannies are everywhere. A few big companies.

Well, is this Allison transmission that you guys are talking about the 6 speed version that debuted in 2006?
