What do you plan on doing with it? A lot of very long distance towing, short distance heavy loads, or what?

In the near term, it will be something to haul lumber and stuff in that I can't fit in my car. In a few years, I'm going to ditch my sedan for a sports car and it will also serve as my winter commuter vehicle. I'm going with a diesel for the better gas mileage.

In that case you may not need to be as concerned over something like a heavy duty tranny. Since it's a commuter, what about just general comfort?

Not sure I understand your question.

I am a chevy man through and through, As far as diesels go, I would have to buy a Dodge w/Cummins and a six-speed. If you need proof go to the local tractor pull on a night that they have street truck pulling - only then will you see.

I have thought of putting an old 12v Cummins in one of the solid front axle Chevy trucks (probably a 68-72).

Alien craft. Older fords are fine. The 6.0 is a worthless pos.

00-02? quad qab diesel ram, install an oversize tranny cooler, and gauges, and go to town.
Built trannies are everywhere. A few big companies.

Yes the Duramax has aluminum heads but I have yet to see a reported blown headgasket or cracked cyclinder head yet,in fact the only Duramax that has come into the shop had water in it's fuel. The Allison transmission that's mated to the Duramax is very heavy duty while the other trannies from dodge and Ford are stnadard duty (no failures yet).
The only thing I dislike is Chevy's body style and chevy is not up to speed in the quality control department as Ford is,please don't get me started with Dodge qaulity control .

hahahahhahaha

Paragrah,what's that ?

Not sure I understand your question.

I mean just go out and test drive a few and see what you like. Then take into consideration the technical aspects.

Uhh being rebuilt at 200k isn't a good thing.
I have a ram 2500. Engine is good, weak tranny, poor build quality. Whatever you get, i'd look for a direct injected one.
Why do you say that? I forgot why he said he rebuilt it then, but the damn thing is still running and fuel consumption hasn't gone up nor does it burn oil. I stand by my recommendation.

That's what I thought as well. This truck has been all over CA to Idaho and Arizona, runs great and aside from a hose problem a few years ago, has been more reliable than he is!
I'm thinking of getting one from that era to do the greasemobile thing with.

This poll is going to be flawed. A lot of people will pick cummins or power stroke as they have heard the name. But if you really look at all the specs the Chevy Duramax ( Or GMC ) is the best choice.
Also don't forget the transmission. With a GMC / Chevy you get a Allison transmission.

<-- Former auto tech that has worked on all of them and use to drive a tow truck with a power stroke.

Well, is this Allison transmission that you guys are talking about the 6 speed version that debuted in 2006?

The allison is the best as far as stock trans's go, but when you start to make about 500hp or greater they keel over too.
If the cummins isb24v was offered in a 4 door chevy pickup with an allison trans, they would dominate ...

That's cute, I wonder what International/Navistar has to say about that.

Anything Dmax should have a 100,000 warranty, and judging by some repair bills I've seen, I'd say it's worth it just to go with the allison combo.
