From what I have read the executioner actually gets paid very well. Some people can do it some go crazy and kill themselves. The ones that are ok with it see it as a job that must be done and don't dwell on it.

One guy kept a diary of every one he had executed and what they had done to deserve it. He was fine with it.

A lot of people back in the day volunteered for it because of the pay but could not handle the stress.

Executioners don't even have to see the person they kill anymore. The electric chair/rope/shooting line is almost extinct. In the US at least.
