Juarez is not the place to be right now....not for Gringos or Mexicans.

However, it may be worth it for the H&B.

Avoid anywhere in Texas.

I can't wait to someday visit Texas properly, and see as many different areas of the state as possible. Most of the Texas hate usually comes from people who have never been there and buy into the "they give guns to newborns for free" crowd from what I have seen.

If the feds can ever fix the border and illegal immigration problems, Texas will be even better I imagine.

Hit the nail on the head. Most of the people that "hate" Texas have never stepped foot in it. They only hate it because of the political color on a map, not because of the things the state has to offer.
The other group that hates Texas are the ones that have only been to Houston.

I've been to Dallas/Plano and while it was okay, I don't think I could deal with the weather and dumbasses in trucks all around. My company tried to move me there afterwards and I quit. Best decision I did since I moved to a new company and made roughly twice as what I was making before.

Texas is nice until you have a problem with the locals. Corruption and 'good ole boys' mentality is rampant.

Van Horn > El Paso > Dallas

The thing that got me about El Paso was the endless dumpy sprawl as I drove east toward Carlsbad. Dump and dump after dump.

I would assume the urban sprawl and associated problems are due to the vast amount of cheap land and real estate the area has.

You couldn't pay me enough to live in a border town.

You must like El Paso for it's easy availability of crack if you think it's better than Dallas.

If Lucy and Ethel had not been working at a chocolate factory but rather at a factory that cranked out dull, soulless, spirit killing neighborhoods and tumbleweedesque shopping centers, Dallas would have been the result. No soul, just an eighty mile wide hunk-o-keep-driving.

I flew in to El Paso on my way to Las Cruces a few years ago. I hope I never have to go back. Entire neighbourhoods had houses that looked like brick bunkers, with 8ft concrete walls around them, bars on every window (not that the windows were big enough to fit a person anyways), and barbed wire on top of the houses and the walls. Every single window in sight had bars on it, and this continued for several miles down the road.

Las Cruces wasn't bad, but very spread out for my tastes. The "you are required to check your guns at the restaurant gun check" at one of the local restaurants/pubs was pretty weird to me.

fify.

The Dallas metro plex has some of the nicest neighborhoods, some of the best employment prospects for an educated person and some of the best environmental conditions....

According to kiplinger.

Many universities, many sporting events and great theaters.

But if the benefits of a real city are lost on you and you prefer a pile of nothing in the middle of nowhere... Might I recommend lyford?

El Paso isn't great but it isn't quite the shithole some people here are making it out to be (although some areas are). As said above if you're moving to the area choose something on the west side, it's considerably nicer than the rest of the city.

The violence in Juarez hasn't really spilled over into El Paso much but it has driven the people who could afford it over the border. The average quality of the population has dropped a bit as a result.

To those recommending Las Cruces, I've lived here most of my 34 years and it's a tough sell. The city is nicer, the people generally friendlier, but there really isn't much to do here. Also, due to being listed as the #1 place to retire in some magazine, the influx of retirees has really driven up housing prices and the sprawl has gotten pretty bad (for a small city). If you're looking for a place to settle down and raise some kids Las Cruces is great, if you're looking to have an active night life or generally want to have lots of stuff to do the west side of El Paso would be better. That said I personally would never live in El Paso if I could help it

As for going to Juarez, don't do it. That place is seriously screwed up right now, and a shadow of it's former self. As an American you used to be able to go over there and have a nice day picking up handmade stuff on the cheap, eat a good meal and then hit the clubs for a kickass night. Now I wouldn't even attempt it.

I just spent two weeks in Texas. I stand by my ratings above though I could understand why some might put Dallas a touch above El Paso. Midland was pretty nice though the town seemed to have a bit of a road building fetish.

Actually it's Plano that's nice, not Dallas proper.

And Midland is what you think of when you think of everything bad in Texas.

But if you do stand by those ratings, there are even smaller and more middle of nowhere towns.

Wanted man in California, wanted man in Buffalo,
Wanted man in Kansas City, wanted man in Ohio,
Wanted man in Mississippi, wanted man in old Cheyenne,
Wherever you might look tonight, you might see this wanted man.

I might be in Colorado or Georgia by the sea,
Working for some man who may not know at all who I might be.
If you ever see me comin' and if you know who I am,
Don't you breathe it to nobody 'cause you know I'm on the lam.

Wanted man by Lucy Watson, wanted man by Jeannie Brown,
Wanted man by Nellie Johnson, wanted man in this next town.
But I've had all that I've wanted of a lot of things I had
And a lot more than I needed of some things that turned out bad.

I got sidetracked in El Paso, stopped to get myself a map
Went the wrong way into Juarez with Juanita on my lap.
Then I went to sleep in Shreveport, woke up in Abilene
Wonderin' why the hell I'm wanted at some town halfway between.

Wanted man in Albuquerque, wanted man in Syracuse,
Wanted man in Tallahassee, wanted man in Baton Rouge,
There's somebody set to grab me anywhere that I might be
And wherever you might look tonight, you might get a glimpse of me.
