If you were stuck on a deserted island, which artist catalog would you have?

Just came off of a 35 hours GD listen (let my PC play all my dead songs) and realized if I were stuck on a desert island and offered only one artsist's music catalog/back catalog, I would choose the Grateful Dead. With their bootleg, WB, Arista and especially the Dick's Picks catalog I would have quite a shitload of great music.

Rush, no question about it.

Of course, for most this question will just amount to, "What is your favorite band?"

The collected "... For Dummies" books on tape. There's got to be a few in there that could teach me basic survival techniques or how to build a boat. Otherwise I'd be completely fucked in less time than it would take me to listen to the collected works of Led Zeppelin or whoever.

Oh, you want my favorite artist or group? I'd probably go with Aesop Rock, maybe Pink Floyd. Or Beethoven, just to mix it up.

There's a bit of difference. Dylan's probably my favorite, but I'm generally not a fan of vocal music. There's times I would't feel like listening to him, but Miles Davis will always sound good. Someone might have a favorite band with a small catalog. If I had to pick one, I'd want someone with more than three albums. Mazzy Star would be a contender except for that three album thing. There's a few bands like that for me, and quantity can beat out quality for this situation.

No, I picked BR because they have a much larger catalogue. The Misfits are my actual favourite band, but their discography is rather limited.

Not really. My favorite band doens't have an extensive catalog so I would get bored fast..

Symphony X has a decently sized catalog and I think there might be enjoyment is listening to a retelling of "The Odyssey" while stranded away from home.

Not really. The key point in the question is catalog. While I love the dead they are not my favorite, but, given the sheer amount of music I would choose them over my favorite group because my favorite group is not even close to catalog size as the dead.

Kinda why I picked The Queers as well. They got a crap ton of studio albums, EPs, splits, etc. Helps they're my favorite band too, I suppose.

Quite possibly none. I think listening to the same music over and over again would drive me more insane than not having any music.

Heh, or the full catalog of a wilderness survival radio show or something.

This would be a difficult decision, as I don't like to limit myself to a single genre or band.
Opeth is my favorite band, and they cover a decent range from Death metal to prog metal to psychedelic rock with a little bit of jazz fusion thrown in occasionally. Mikael Akerfeldt has also appeared as a guest musician for several other bands, and he was a member of Bloodbath for a while and also Katatonia .... which adds more death metal, as well as some deathgrind to the list of genre's.

Then there's Steven Wilson, which covers a lot more rock, and overall a greater number of songs and styles, since he's in like 10 bands. He's clearly my second favorite musician. He's also done production work for Opeth. (as well as his collaborative album with Akerfeldt)

I'd also consider Arjen Anthony Lucassen as his bands/projects generally include tons of awesome guest musicians, and he's played as a guest musician for 20+ other bands, so there'd be a good mix of music, and plenty of music to go around.

One other mention I'd consider is Dan Swano. He's been in a number of awesome bands and projects. he's done production and engineering for a number of bands, and essentially, he's had his hands on so many albums, I'd probably be able to listen to music for a week straight without ever hearing the same thing twice.

But ... I really couldn't decide between those 4.

I change my vote to Ayreon. Could listen to those albums for eternity.

Same with Star One and possibly Stream of Passion.

Guilt Machine, probably not.

Yea, Ayreon and Star one are fvcking majestic!

I really like Stream of Passion a lot too.

Not really familiar with Guilt Machine

I also even like the Ambeon albums decently, though not among my favorites at all.
