If you were to buy a Multi-GPU setup, would it be SLI or Crossfire?

I am definatly interested to see how well this R580 will perform. I do speculate a huge improvement in all area's. Altho I wouldn't expect it (Crossfire) to be equal or better than SLI til next Gen.

I will never need the kind of performance multi-gpu's provide, let alone pay for it.

A8R-MVP performance was very very close to Asus A8N32-SLI but where Asus A8R-MVP goes short is where features + looks. A8R-MVP is an ugly looking board but don't let that fool you since its got a hidden beast under its ugliness. A8R-MVP32-Crossfire RD580 should rock . very cheap mainstream stream overclocking motherboard.

I would love an ATI as a single card solution. In fact, I plan on having one once the 1900's hit the shelves. That being said, I don't think Crossfire or Crossfire mobos are ready for primetime yet. Close, but not quite there.

If I HAD to have a dual card right now, SLI.

All IMO of course.

LOL, and 640k is more than enough right? Never say never.

Oh, yeah, the poll. I voted SLI.

Two killers the Master card issue, and as it stands the lackluster features on the southbridge. Nvidia was better set with their single chip config then ATI on their dual chip (chip here = Chipset) in this respect. The only reason I would look at ATI is if they created a Soundstorm like product for audio. Thats the one thing I miss from the Nforce boards. This master card nonsense just makes it worse. Untill they actually start selling the XT masters the better alternative to buying a XT (and a ATI Xfire board) would be to buy 2 7800GTs and SLI them for 50$ more and have better performance then the XT in just about everything and no matter what a much higher Minimum FPS.

Bad time to ask.
I wouldn't buy one right now as new ATi cards will be out possibly before month end, and new nVidia within 2 or 3 months.

I'm not asking whether you will buy THIS GENERATION, I'm asking which if any would you choose.

Not gonna buy either, so voted that way.

If for some reason I was going to buy one it would be Crossfire since I already have an X1800 and a Crossfire ready mobo. Would just need a master card.

great topic

Suggest you add a "View Results"

if i were buying TODAY and prices were equal, it'd be SLI.

it IS more mature , , , however, i would NEVER buy today . . . since x1900xt xfire is 'around the corneer', i'd wait to see what ATi brings and the price effects it will have on other xfire/sli pricing . . .

. . . but i voted - at the moment - I have no interest in spending that kind of loot for gaming [now]

Will there be a way for me to use my NF4 SLI mobo with Crossfire? If not, that really sucks because then I'm stuck with SLI as a multi-gpu config unless I swap mobos. Don't get me wrong, I see the marketing genius behind it, and I'm extemely satisfied with my SLI at the moment. But I'll buy whatever gives better performance for the money I'm willing to spend, and if that's Crossfire, it'll suck not being able to just pop the cards in.

SLI, most definitely. ATI has yet to come out with a dual card setup that is complete IMO, and to make matters worse every improvement has been via a hardware change. Anyone that bought an X850XT Xfire rig banking on the fact that ATI would iron out the issues in the future only got it half right. ATI fixed the issues, but not for their setup. Support IMO is the next thing right after price and performance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that ATI doesn't support their products, but by design, Xfire makes it difficult for them to do so.

As of ight now IF I were to go dual GPU it would have to be SLI. I operate on a price to performance scale and currently SLI'ed 7800GT's win that easily.

Right now, Sli, in the future, who knows!? More importantly, with both companies releasing new products is such short cycles with much better performance, neither solution appeals to me.

Neither. I'd rather upgrade a single card more often than unload $1000 into 2 cards of the same generation.

But that's also because I'm on a CRT, and I dont have to run every game at 1900x1200 or else it will look like crap. If I had to go dual, it depends on the performance and features, and the stability of the platform. SLI is a more mature platform with fewer issues, but if dual x1900 is faster than dual g71, then I'd go crossfire for more performance.

Assuming money is no factor.

SLI hands down. Crossfire is still very new, and is still working out all the bugs. Additionally, at present time 2x GTX 512's are the fastest configuration available.

Perhaps in the future Crossfire will be as seasoned as SLI is, it certainly is moving along quite well now. There is nothing that leads me to believe that Crossfire wont be as good as SLI. (Although i do prefer SLI's internal bridge rather than the external pass through connector that Crossfire has, but only minor nitpicking)

I'd choose SLI. I can always mod my Ultra-D into an SLI, and SLI is more mature right now. Dual 7800GTs sounds like a cheap and powerful path to take.

with out a doubt SLI. Its the only choice in my opinion. R580 may change things but that is yet to be seen.

I hope DFI didnt cover the resistors you have to mod with some "goop" like they did mine. I popped off my northbridge only to find what I can only describe as "crap" covering the posts you have to connect with a circuit writer.

After about an hour with a razor blade I was able to get down far enough to make my connection and everything works, but that was definately the scariest hour of my life! Thought I was gonna have to drop $$$ on a new mobo on top of my second GT cause I'm pretty sure I voided my warranty!

On topic-

7800GT SLI are the best bang for the buck I have seen in a long time for video cards. Better than GTX 512 performance for less than $600? Cant be beat.

If I was forced, I'd probably buy Crossfire. However, both are hideously expensive and total overkill.

if i were forced i'd buy SLI.

but then, i don't really need the bleeding edge, so i'll be content with a single GPU solution for the time being.
