ed: and everyone but my parents and grandpa would be in the dark as much as possible

I love how everyone always says "ill live off the interest for the rest of my life"

How much interest you plan on getting?

Like you would let all that money sit in the bank and live a paltry life on $50k interest a year? Come on..

If you won $10 million (and assuming the OP meant after taxes), you could pull down $400,000 a year at 4% interest.

First of all, you would have to find someone to give you 4% on an amount that big and have it insured. Secondly, you still pay tax on that. And still, no one is going to let $10m just "sit" in a bank and live on $400k a year even if they could get that.

Ok so taxes on 400k per year would leave me with at least 200-300k per year, still a very livable income, and what in the world makes you think it's so hard to find some place to invest 10M? There's nothing that says you'd have to find just one place to invest all of it at the same time, you could break it up into 500k chunks, etc. I also don't get why you think nobody in the world would be content to live off of 400k per year for the rest of their life as opposed to blowing 10M in two years and living a regular joe shmo work-a-day life after that.

Tax exempt municipal bonds currently yield more than 4%, and most are insured (if you trust the insurance.)

I wouldn't tell anyone unless I absolutely had to. I wouldn't want people showing interest in me just for the sake of my money.

i wouldn't tell, but yea I would get new stuff. I'd probably put 1 mil of it in "spending" money for a house, car, other immediate spending. Not that I would spend it all, but keep it liquid... I think I probably wouldn't even spend more than half. Then the rest of it would go to the banks or whatever for interest...
