um...they make docking stations...unless you mean working at a starbucks or something, but that seems extremely weird to me (other than maybe as an emergency or to do something quick while away from home). seems it would be weird to the employees of said place also.

it does get lonely working at home but it's nice to no have to drive in traffic, deal with idiot co-workers, etc.

Reading comprehension fail. Read the second line.

Working from home is much better than working at work. I can't stand working at work. It's so pointless. I think, "I could be doing this at home right now AND I could be eating something I want for cheap. Why am I here, again? Oh right, 'American business'."

Usually a coffee shop in the morning, go home for lunch, then head to the library for the afternoon. I don't like doing real work stuff at home because it blurs the boundaries between home and work. When I'm at home I relax or pursue my own interests, when I'm at work I do the things I get paid to do.

I suppose if I had a study in my house or a specific room that I could dedicate to my job I would be OK working from home, but I don't have that luxury.

It makes middle managers very nervous when they look out of their offices and don't see anyone to manage.

I have some sort of weirdness where I can not concentrate on coding unless I am in a very familiar environment. My familiar environment is my cube or home office.

I would be useless working anywhere else. It took me a good 3 weeks before I felt comfortable writing code when we moved offices a few years back. I had to look for non-coding tasks.

I'm a work from home employee, pretty much full time not counting travel. No, I don't generally work from a "hangout place" - in general the time spent getting there, getting set up, ignoring distractions etc isn't worth it. I'm also on calls 6-10 hours a day, and going somewhere with background noise is out unless I'm literally on my way to the airport.

On RARE occasion I'll need to engage a different part of my brain, so I'll grab a notebook and go somewhere else, whether outside on my door stoop, a table at a local restaurant, whatever, and I'll hash out the details of a particular project. It's just got to be very contained in scope to make it worthwhile and make it work.

yup... this is an attitude exclusive to American business. it's well known that in every other country, everyone just works from home and office parks are non-existent

tbh, in my experience it varies so much from employee to employee I can understand why managements are hesitant to fully embrace telecommuting. I've worked with tons of people who do great work when they're in the office but their productivity drops when they're working from home (and not to throw shade, but tbh, I think it's usually the people who have kids at home)

in my company, management reluctantly accepts it. they'd rather everyone be in the office, but given the choice between having to take a sick/personal day versus working from home, they'd rather we work from home (if I'm sick, need to stay home to wait for a delivery/repairman, there's a blizzard outside, etc)
