If your current profession disappeared, what would you do?

Do you have a fall back plan/ideas/other skills/education?

I know a little about a lot of things but nothing that I can make the same income doing. Probably not even 1/3.

so there are no longer any computers in the world?

ok, i could go back to Electrician, which is what i was in the Navy. i'd have to be an apprentice to either a commercial or residential electrician to learn all the details, but i have the theory

i'd probably just go on the govt dole and not work anymore, although being unemployed in a world with no computers/internets doesn't sound as enticing

Good $$ to be made being an electrician.

Heh, maybe more of the unemployed would look harder if all the xbox/psp/game systems.....died.

Sorry, Shorty. We need unemployed bums to look down on.

Wife/kid/retirement to worry about so I can't do that. Although it sounds great.

@CTD, you brew and I'll drink.

I'm a pretty handy guy, so if I can't be a scientist, I can still be a great technician/electrician/handyman/mechanic/etc.

Considering my profession is the foundation of business (accounting), if it were to disappear the country would probably be in anarchy. In that case, I've always wanted to be a mercenary.

I could probably find work as an electrician. Since I'm a math teacher, if there were no more math teachers, I think that people competent in math would be in high demand. (As it is, actuarial majors enjoy a nearly 0% unemployment rate; many are hired by Sept of their senior year.) Or, I could work as a plumber, or handyman in general - doing remodeling, etc.

My profession (sales) is all but dead. I'm now officially in customer service.

My real skill is in troubleshooting and service. I can learn the ins and outs of pretty much anything, pretty quickly. I've done it in all my previous roles (car audio, cellular, electronics, pharmaceutical manufacturing and now cable). I've been more familiar with how things work and how they break than people who had been around for years.

So if my current job went away, I would sue people.

Good question. I kind of wish my current profession WOULD disappear (Sharepoint dev), as it would light a fire under me to do something else.

At any rate, I'd be fine. I could move into project management, maybe take a year of refresher courses and go back into EE, or go back to SysAdmin.

if tax accountants were no longer needed I'd either go into audit or join the FBI.

I do network surveillance, so guess that could fall under telecommunications or maybe even IT. If both of those were to vanish, I'd probably look at Electrician or general contractor. There's a huge shortage of those. Between small jobs and bigger jobs there's always work to be done. Not as cushy as the office job I have now though.

I would obviously need some training though. I know a decent amount when it comes to electrical and other stuff but not enough to do it professionally.

Go back to school for medical field (a good part of the rest of my family is in the medical field) or be a car mechanic (my own shop).
