That would require the whole IT field to disappear since I've done bits of programming, sysadmin, DB admin, network, IS security. Guess I can use my troubleshooting/fixing skills to apply to a trade like electronics/HVAC/auto repair with a bit of training. I like to cook too so that wouldn't be so bad...tho the pay would suck.

I, by my career choice, am about as close to ensured that I will always have a career as one can really be. Other than career military I guess. I'm, at the root, a designer/drafter. Pretty much as long as humans are constructing pretty much any kind of commercial or industrial product, people with my skills are a necessity. While my field is definitely not stable - we often have booms and busts, extremes in both regards - there will always be a fairly considerable workforce required. And quite frankly, I'm good enough at my job that I shouldn't have much trouble always being one of the guys that doesn't get laid off or does find a new good job quickly

If EMRs were to disappear we might have somewhat bigger issues to deal with.
Not even counting the government mandates for the transition to them for those that haven't already.

Your the waterboy for the local highway construction crew?!?

I don't work on site, but may have to. Regardless, I am the lowest paid and lowest grade person on a construction site usually, so I do everythang...

Im a tow truck dispatcher and its very unlickely that either

a) people/companies will stop owning personal/company vehicles
b) vehicles will become so reliable they dont break and people become smart enough never to kill there batteries, lock there keys in, or drive off the road or ever get into a accident
c) construction companies stop using equipment to build and never need it transported

Since thats pretty much impossible and never going to happen my job is faily safe.

However i have contacts in the gas/oil industry and if i had to would go north and work the fields.

I have the background to be a computer engineer, although I imagine computer engineers wouldn't be in high demand if software engineering went away.

If my job (civil engineer) disappeared, I have no idea what I would do. I'm not sure CE will ever disappear. Or if it does, we're really screwed.

Perhaps my particular subset (tunneling/microtunneling), in which case I'd likely switch to mine engineering.

In other news, if you are looking for an entry level tunnel or micro-tunneling engineer, I would love a job.

Currently I'm a laid off IBEW Installer/Tech* who is now Mr. Mom. So I'm pretty sure I could just do what I'm doing now and stay as Mr. Mom. Alternatively, if my specific field disappeared I could transition to electrician pretty easily. Not that jobs on that side are in any real abundance right now.

* Low-volt electrical commercial/industrial/etc, aka data, voice, video, sound, security, anything outside of power

Probably get some data entry job somewhere or some other mindless job. Doing programming is the only job I've really ever wanted.

Same for me.

Absolute worst case for me would be stay at home Dad and then wait tables a couple nights a week for cash and extra padding money until I found something else to do.

I've got a pretty extensive skill set(but not highly specialized in any of them) and not exceptionally picky about my career so long as it's a decent place to work for. I'd find something I'd enjoy.

if it disappears, we'll probably either be all subsistence farming or fighting the machine onslaught, so...
