S'all good. I'm proud of my small environmentally clean and energy efficient town. Large populations are overrated.

I don't get it. Once you go large, you can't even sustain the amount of power you need. 6 Nuclear power plants cant even save me. I gobble up like 20,000 MW, so I just demolished it all and went for happy citizens instead. That no doubt gave me a crappy rating.

I got to 3.5 million people but very polluted, even though I didn't have one single nuke plant

Damn you OP, I've been playing this for 1 hour straight

What I do is build two hydro plants, two nuke plants, and once my energy usage gets to about 75% of production, I turn on "No growth" in the city and jack up the tax rates if I need to build more stuff (usually the stadium and amusement park). 10-15 turns before the end of the game, I turn growth back on and I am still able to get an A or A+ in energy management provided I didn't have problems earlier in the game.

Can you upgrade the Nuclear plants like you can the Hydro plants?

Yep. They upgrade twice, to large nuclear plants.

I finally got a successful city, and ended with almost 10 million residents and $1 million in the bank, however, the citizen gave me low approval for the nuclear power plants (needed for development). I couldn't believe how much electricity I was using at then end....like $50k, per turn!

Sure, he wasn't very good for the economy, but the trains ran on time!

I gave up on power once I started turning large profits with 0% tax.

Second try:
9,424,916 citizens (hoping for that 10 mil break...should have lowered taxes earlier)
$2,399,260

B-/A+/A+/A+
overall 91/A-

I have NO idea how you are supposed to keep up on power management near the end. I had two fully upgraded nuclear power plants, two fully upgraded hydroelectric dams, two fully upgraded wind farms, a fully upgraded solar farms, and two fully upgraded tidal farms, and I was still creating less electricity than I was BUYING. Luckily I was filthy rich by then.

How are you guys developing into 1 mil population, the money trickle in so slow in the beginning for development.

Do you trade coal and gas or you get the money from tax?

56/C+ on my first try. I never had enough money to buy a power plant. I did build a ski resort/airstrip like the hints suggested, didn't have enough power though. Coal mines/gas things seem to suck at first. Fun game - Hope they continue to make the game better and this isn't it. I think it's funny you can make everyone go to bed by 8

Both.
My first step each game is to increase tax rate to 29%. (Never go above 30)

I traded about 700 coal when it hit $42, and 500 gas when it $37 during the mid game(somwhere between day 30-60 I believe).
Don't bother to use those resources for electricity...Sell them on the market.

Once you break 1million population, it doesn't even help. You end up buying more than you even produce. You might as well demolish the nukes and make your citizens happy.

Build two hydro plants at the very beginning, and then build a sawmill. Money will pour in.

I only built one hydro plant and upgraded it to max.
Went straight nuclear after it.

How much money do you get from sawmill?
I've never built it and always skipped straight to the Aluminum thingy.

Also discovered I've been wasting potential money and environmental score...
I now chop the 3 native bushes until it gets to about 55-65 wood, then turn them straight into National parks. Get an A in environmental, easy.

Is there anything in the water at all?
I've always been prospecting and saw nothing. Seems like a waste of time to do so.

There's gas underwater sometimes. The gas platform is expensive though.

I found I could get as good of scores if I went "all green" and didn't prospect/mine, didn't have a paper mill, nor aluminum smelter.

You found it by prospecting? Been doing that for ages in every game and never found any.
I only mine gas/coal to trade them on the market...Trading 600 gas for $30-40 each can give you some excellent cash infusion midgame(day 50-70 or so).
Granted the last game I played, gas never went above $9 and coal $18, so it's still a gamble.

I think the highest market price I ever saw a resource was $84...
