IHS selling for 100+. WHY!?

I was browsing eBay looking at 165s, and noticed that an IHS was selling for $100 with 2 days left!

Seeing as a 165 is only ~325 dollars, why on earth is it selling for so much? (I'm assuming it'll probably double in that time. Maybe not, but if it does I know I'll be going naked next chip around.

Just curious.

Because some moron assumed that Opteron 165 IHS meant that it was a chip with an IHS or something of the sort. Sometimes people dont freaking read before bidding...

In bold, large text:

"This auction, as stated, is for the metal part(IHS) on top of the Opteron 165 CPU. CPU is not included."

The real question I have is whether or not people will apply these to their processors and claim that it's that stepping--(then turn around and sell it on eBay/etc.)

I'd love to recoup 30% of the cost on a CPU, but not if it means someone else getting ripped off.

Hmmm...I should sell my spare 165 IHS on Ebay USA I guess...
Or put the 165 IHS on my old 3200+ Winnie and make a fortune...

Perhaps they'll try ripping someone off but since that's counterfeiting I'd say its way more trouble than it's worth. I suppose some kiddie may try it a few times but once someone reports it and AMD starts paying attention to it we'll probably see some sort of crack-down and AMD will probably end up using thermal epoxy on its CPUs to keep this from happening again.

Regardless, no one thinks that an IHS is worth $100+ (if you were buying these to put it on another CPU it'd be a pretty goddam expensive price to pay for it). So if you sold one for $100 you are ripping some person off. Even if they're morons who dont seem to know how to read...

Pretty much the same reason empty Xbox 360 boxes were selling for $600. People don't pay attention, others capitalize on it.

That's where I was at with it.

Well, lesson learned to whomever buys it.

Well, if the seller makes it plain and clear on the auction that its only the IHS and people are dumb enough to bid that high then what can you do?

The problem is not that people are stupid enough to bid more than its worth but rather the seller's intent. Like TankGuys said people sell empty xbox360 boxes with the goal of having some person overpay for it. The same can be said about the people selling an IHS. Just because it's an easy way to make a quick buck doesn't mean its right or that you can disclaim any responsability by having a "disclaimer" in your auction.

so they shouldn't be allowed to sell an IHS on ebay?
i have seen a person on these forums ask if anyone had an IHS that they could have. so obviously someone would probably buy it. hell i'd buy it for a few dollars to make a nice keychain. Is it the sellers fault that people are don't read? it's in big bold letters at the top.

You can sell whatever you want on ebay, that's not the problem. The people doing all the selling, though, are not trying to sell it as an IHS, they're hoping some poor idiot will think it's the actual CPU and overpay a lot for it. I havent seen the actual auction the OP is referring to but the last one I saw showed a picture of the surface of the IHS (I cant remember if he showed it mounted on the chip but I thought it looked like it was the chip). Also, saying something like "Opteron 165 dual core 1.8Ghz 2MB L2 ******0521**** integrated heat spreader" in the topic is hardly what I'd consider the most honest title for the auction. Sure the people bidding should pay attention but the seller intends the whole thing to be misleading.

I saw the auction, and the seller made it clear as day all over the auction that he was selling the heat spreader only. You'd be hard pressed to say he was posting it hoping some poor schmuck was textblind to the letters "IHS".

It's the stuff like this that really drives me nuts. I sell on eBay, and while I've never encountered this sort of situation, I see some really stupid people. If any of those people that bid on the IHS actually thought it was a CPU, they deserve to be shot.

And of course everyone knows what IHS means...

Being idiots doesn't make their getting ripped off right or "deserved". I think a lot of people should be shot but that doesn't mean that if anyone does shoot them I'd say "that's fine, that moron deserved to die". I suppose everyone has a different sensitivity to this kind of stuff but I really hate people who compromise their honesty for a quick buck.

They don't need to know what an IHS means, but the multiple exclamations of "THIS IS NOT A PROCESSOR" should clue them in. I never said it's right that they get ripped off, just that I hate people who are stupid enough to have that happen to them because their reading comprehension is non-existant. They shouldn't even be on eBay in the first place.

If they cannot read THIS IS NOT A PROCESSOR then they DESERVE to lose their money.

but at least this seller is going to allow people to cancel bids...boy people are so careless but this sudden desire to sell the IHS is very worrisome....why would you want except to try and defraud someone by placing it on a another cpu????

these things should be no more than $20???

Yeah, that auction is pretty crappy. He should have made it clear that this was not a processor from the get go.

"AMD Opteron 165 Integrated Heat Spreader" could easily be interpreted as meaning "AMD Opteron 165 with Integrated Heat Spreader". The title would be far less misleading if it were stated as "Integrated Heat Spreader from Opteron 165" or "Integrated Heat Spreader off Opteron 165". The existing title starts off sounding like it's an Opty 165 for sale.

Natural language is imprecise. Anyone posting an ad this (potentially) misleading needs to be precise in what they state. That said, it is also incumbent on the buyer to be sure of what they're buying, and ask the seller questions if there is any doubt.

In any case - good luck getting $100 from the moron who thought he was buying the whole CPU and didn't bother to read the details, if he figures out what he did before sending payment. Even after paying he'd probably call the credit card company and dispute the charge when he doesn't get the CPU he thought he bought.
