Can someone point me to a guide on using IIS 5.0 in Windows 2000? I'd really appreciate it. Also, does IIS allow me to enter nameserver addresses so that someone who types in my domain name will automatically get to my webserver?
Thanks,
What exactly do you need to do? There's so many things you can do with IIS that reading the help file will actually be your best "guide" on using it.
As for DNS, IIS doesn't do that it's the built-in DNS server on Win2k Server which i presume you also have.
IIS comes with 2k Pro, so it's possible that he doesn't actually have 2k Server. And 2k Pro does not have a built in DNS server. Check out http://www.granitecanyon.com for a free DNS hosting service. Of course, nothing beats being able to edit your DNS records instantly.
Does anyone have a link for setting up IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 Professional machine correctly? (newbie here ) I want to use a webcam and was wondering if I could just have someone go to my IP address like 65.2.65.??? or do I need a DNS entry? I have a cable modem with a Netgear RT311 router...Thanks!
I can't think of any links off the top of my head, but you might check out the help files included with IIS 5.0, and then poke around the configuration menus for IIS under Computer Management. It shouldn't be too hard to get a basic site up, and then you can tweak settings later. It'll also be a learning experience.
Most webcam programs give you the option to save captured images somewhere. You'll want to save these in your www content directory which will be something like c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Webcam. You are also going to want to forward port 80 on the netgear router to your internal (192.168.x.x) IP so that people on the internet can access your page. And yes, they can do so by just typing http://your.public.ip.here/Webcam in their browser.
