They waved in units, having fresh boats landing in on 2nd/3rd/4th rounds makes the damage boats go to reserves and puts fresh ones in front.

I was wondering if I should just skip crystal island and focus on marble early on.

You need it for GR upgrades, pushing tech upgrades early and subs (rockets are better but far more expensive). GR upgrades are the killer, you need one at least for that eventually.
