Get ready to defend yourself!
Few things I recommend:
Blow up dumps and use double warehouses. Keep your goods below the safe value. Spend it, or the enemy will take it.
Don't keep your cooks and tenders with your army/navy but keep them close. If your main forces get attacked you will run out of morale and the troops will scatter. Saves you from heavy losses while you are offline.
If you aren't using sulfur to build troops, trade it to someone who is.
Don't engage in large battles unless it's to break up a roaming force who is causing issues in the area. Large battles are almost always balanced so each side is doing 50% damage. They can also last a LONG time meaning the other side can reinforce.
Whiteflag a battle if you are taking heavy losses. There's little reason to ever loose 2nd line units because you're getting flanked or your front line dies.
If you are getting hammered and they are getting nothing in return they will leave you alone.
