Ikea has imposed a 30% restocking fee on all items (table, chair, etc...) that require some assembly. Even the item is unused, your wallet may shrink. Officemax, Staples, and others BM don't have such policy. Use Amex card Amex if you can to get back the full credit.

You should get 100% for all un-opened boxes. It's safer to verify with the store manager.

Maybe you read the directions badly and built the table incorrectly? I've never had a problem with their stuff.

No, more power to literacy and being able to follow directions.

HeroOfPellinor - yeah!
Less power to unlucky ones who got some items poorly manufactured from China. I'll stick with items made in US, Japan, or Korea and pay a bit more to get better quality. The objective is to warn all shoppers to watch their wallet during this holiday season...

I find it hard to believe you got 3 broken tables and none of it was your fault.

Even the cheapest stuff at Ikea is pretty decent quality, and the meatball special is a HOT deal.

I've had quite a bit of Ikea furniture. A few of their cheap desks, which I pretty much beat on and they survived...albeit one I really beat on and had to do some repairs....

Just bought a new, bigger, nicer one in fact.

For the most part, majority of their stuff is mid-grade. But should still last a good amount of time with normal use.

Don't know what to think about 3 bad tables in a row tho, doesn't add up.

yea no kidding, i've bought over 10 pieces of large furniture and dozens of smaller bits. not once was something missing or broken. i can see why they'd charge though, repacking one fo those jigsaw sets is kinda hard and labour intensive lol i don't think they charge for even exchange..and thats what matteres

I dunno, when I looked through an ikea catalog I thought a lot of the stuff looked pretty nice and well built/thought out, but there were a few items I wasn't sure about. Then I went and spent a couple hours in one of their stores - and walked out more confused than when I went in. I'd say I'd really only consider owning about 20% of what they sell - MOSTLY the 20% most expensive, but some of it was sprinkled here and there. For instance they had all kinds of misc bedroom furniture, freestanding closets and the like, anywhere from $79 to $300 for one piece. The $79 ones screamed out "I'm garbage" as soon as you opened the door - but the $300 ones seemed pretty slick. In the catalog you'd be hard pressed to identify any differences.

Having said all that, if I lived near a store, I'd probably own more of their stuff - but after coming back home and reading through the catelog again, I honestly couldn't figure out what to buy!

If you need furniture to fill up a room (ie a den you rarely use etc) Ikea is GREAT. The stuff looks nice and is cheap. But for furniture that you'll use all the time - or if you aren't particularly careful with your stuff - you have to be careful what you pick.

It does happen. I exchanged two Compaq, the reason, power button was not installed - I was told they were made in US, some good "made in USA", some bad ones.

I live a couple of minutes from Ikea, and I have a lot of their stuff, and yes, their quality can leave something to be desired - and it's spread pretty evenly between the expensive stuff and the cheap stuff.

If they're really going to have a 30% restocking fee then I'm going to seriously cut down on the stuff I buy there. I'd say that one out of 3 things I buy from them has something seriously wrong - pieces missing, part A doesn't fit part B, broken or warped wood or imitation wood, wrong instructions included, etc. I know the return people pretty well .

No, more power to literacy and being able to follow directions.

Okay, that line is hilarious!! Did you hear yourself? Have you ever bought anything at IKEA? Literacy has nothing to do with it - all their directions are strictly pictures, no words.

I replaced all the cabinets in my kitchen (old house) with IKEA stuff, the directions were illustrations of how to assemble them because they don't feel like publishing directions in 97 different languages.

Back on topic, we have bought lots of stuff there from flooring to lighting to cabinets and everything in between - it's good stuff. The holes alwaus line up, the right amount of hardware is always there and the fit/finish is great. Have you bought any of the boxed furniture are Wal-Mart recently? I have to re-drill holes, reinforce it with my own stock, etc.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but overall they rock. I do, however, agree the lines and parking is hideous, but those Swedish Meatballs make me forget all that in an instant!! ;-)

The piece was broken out of the box. I didn't get to put it together.
BTW, I've never had a problem with Ikea before this.
Maybe it was this table? Anyways they gave me $50 certificate.

Yea, I think most Ikea stuff falls between walmart quality and the likes of American Modelers or some specialty stores. It's decent stuff for the price. I went there for my first time a few weeks ago and got a beautiful desk for under $100.

Ikea's unofficial policy is make it pretty on the surface, charge more, skimp on the inside, have the customer worry about bringing the huge purchase back home.

The stuff does look nice, some are decent material, most are not.

Oh, btw, I still shop there and buy according to price/quality. Being a DIYer, it's also a great place to get ideas!
