Very sad, leaves behind a wife and five month old child. Sounds like this officer was a positive influence on his community, a role model, someone that loved his country. This happened in CA, so this murderer will be on the tax payers' dime for the rest of his natural life. Would be much better if he was at the end of a rope within a year if found guilty.

The reality is that this was a failure of state law. The fellow had been arrested twice, but because of our "sanctuary state" law, he couldn't be turned over to ICE.
I believe he was stopped for suspected DUI, and because of his two prior convection's for the same offence, the third one would have been a felony, and that would have allowed the police to turn him over to ICE.

That's not precisely correct. I don't know how long he was held but ICE has access to State data about illegals who are being held. If they want somebody, they'll be there when the party is released from State custody. Happens all the time, I'm sure. California jails just won't hold them for however long it takes for ICE to take custody.

Doesn't that leave us in the same place? Because of state policy, a fellow who shouldn't have been here and had already been arrested twice, killed a cop to avoid a third DUI.
I don't see any way to put a positive spin on that. Why can't we have an effective and semi logical immigration policy that all of the states adhere to? It's not unreasonable for a nation to control it's borders, it's not unreasonable to deport those that enter illegally and commit crimes. The problem seems to be that we've decided this is a Trump thing and not a United States thing. We hate the message because we hate the messenger.
Immigrants aren't a bad thing, I know a bunch of them, I'm an immigrant. But we need to get past the crazy and into the logic, we need a system that helps others and helps the US. The system we have now has failed completely, it's time to fix it.
