The OP is right, but this appears to be a give away for current customers, as opposed to a give away for just anybody. NVIDIA is clearly stating that this is the case... Consider it a 'customer appreciation' drawing.

Thanks OP for showing the conflicting directions Nvidia put out. It does seem like a Catch 22 with "not having to make a purchase" but also "needing and SLi motherboard / GPU".

However, I don't think this is breaking a law since a lottery in itself almost always requires a purchase to enther - Click
Players buy (or are given) chances and prizes are distributed by casting lots.
If anything it seems like they just mis-worded their disclaimers.

Hey guys. How bout you learn the law?

And if you check XS you WILL see most of these points have already been addressed. If they say it's onjly for people who already have an SLi mobo and card then that is of course still requiring a purchase whether in the past or the future. It requires/d a purchase. They even suggest that you DO purchase this.

The simple fact is they cannot stipulate that you must be a customer in order to enter.

By the way guys type in your state and type in lottery law. You'll find out that it's almost always illegal except when run by the state itself.

Wreckage lmfao read up boy read up. my point is very valid. We shall see if the AG does anything. Nelsius it's is quite funny.

I bet some nvidia employee thought that this was a great idea to gain new customers and reward the old ones but the sad fact is that it IS illegal.

. "Lottery" means an unlawful gambling scheme in which (a) the players pay or agree to pay something of value for chances, represented and differentiated by numbers or by combinations of numbers or by some other media, one or more of which chances are to be designated the winning ones; and (b) the winning chances are to be determined by a drawing or by some other method based upon the element of chance; and (c) the holders of the winning chances are to receive something of value.

http://www.gambling-law-us.com/State-Laws/New-Jersey/

Finally, a contest in which participation is conditioned on payment of value and in which prizes are awarded primarily by chance is a lottery rather than a contest. Under California law, only the California State Lottery may operate a lottery. All other lotteries, except bingo games operated by charitable organizations, are prohibited by California's Penal Code.

http://www.gambling-law-us.com/State-Laws/California/

ATI had a giveaway but they gave it a game. It's a "contest" if their is a game of skill and chance but this "giveaway" has no game and therefore no skill and is a lottery.

LOVE to say "I told you so". Wreckage you just hate me because of my sig.

I just entered the contest perfectly fine, and have neither a SLI mobo, or even a nVidia GPU for that matter.

So as far as I'm concerned, this is ridiculous.

have they changed their rules? If so then I agree I am corrected right now, however before they required both.

hah I just checked the rules still state that a purchase is required. It doesn't really mean absolute crap if you got in. If they simply state that they require a purchase then it's illegal. The whole topic was to show that it IS illegal and guess what it is.

hmm so go talk to your legislators about having the lottery laws removed if you like. I'm not sure what state your from so I can't comment exactly. Disagreeable? Probably. Ridicoulous? absolutely not as I am correct and it still is a valid point.

The activeX filter I believe it is isn't that great. It makes mistakes I think. Someone had both and was still disqualified. Maybe the drivers. idk. all I know is that the only nvidia card I have is a geforce2. Still works great though. No mobo.

I don't get it?
They're not forcing you to buy anything and what I can see the contest is open to people who have SLI.

Your just making sh!t up now. You have some sort of hate of Nvidia?
I don't get what the big deal is. So if you own a SLI setup you can enter. If you don't, then you don't...
I think this is just something to "reward" people with SLI.

Why the fsck you think it's called SLI Club/Zone?

hahaha

They are forcing you to HAVE or BUY the SLI ready mobo or card in order to get into the contest nullifying it's contest and making it into the lottery which is illegal.

I bet I own that gambling web-site too. Made up that whole thing. Added in filler laws just to make it look like I am right.... sure

It is to reward people with SLI. Still illegal nonetheless.

Why the fsck can you read and understand law? Oh I guess it shouldn't apply because I guess nvidia wasn't trying to get more customers in an illegal lottery they were only trying to reward the original ones? Well hey guess what it's still open to those who buy in right now.

I put links up so people can read them. Either do so or don't bother replying.

What things have I made up? jw. That it's illegal? SLI zone itself means nothing.

argueable. Still I think the state would define it as a lottery because I believe they still say you can get into the contest by buying a sli mobo and card. And yes your response makes the most sense so far.

This is ridiculous. Stop TRYING to find something wrong. As people said earlier, this is viral marketing at its pinnacle.

When I buy cards and what not they always have things like "Register this card to win _______". They aren't doing the lottery or anything illegal.

Seriously stop polluting our Video Forums.

-Kevin
(Also, something completely aside the point, why the hell would you access the SLI Zone web page without and SLI system????)

Viral marketing? Yes because when a company breaks the law and I post a thread asking whether or not it's an illegal lottery and prove so along with about hmm almost everybody in the thread making asses of themselves I'm the viral marketer? Tell me what exactly defines me as a viral marketer.

I'm not even understanding what you put into the parentheses. elaborate?

You seem convinced with your opinion on the matter, so why would you need to ask us?

Afterall, it's not like you're taking our opinions with much value anyways (calling everyone an ass who doesn't agree with you).

I asked because I knew most of you WOULd make an ass out of yourselves. Hey I actually tried to back up my points.

Actually gaminphreek maybe right in that if you buy something with actual value instead of solely for the lottery it isn't illegal. But can anyone find me where that would be? I proved my end. Prove yours. god is that so hard? I actually posted links. What was in that quote that did anything but troll?

One could say the same for you. You are spreading plenty of BS among multiple threads.

They provide a contact email for the contest. everyday@nvidia.com

Not one relevant fact has been posted that there is anything wrong with this "contest".

I only made 1 thread. wtf are you talking about? On XS? I didn't even start that thread. It simply was a continuation. so point 1 is invalidated.

Not 1 relevant fact? I posted the lottery laws from Cali which FCG is from and from NJ which is where I am from.

ty for notifying me of the contact e-mail. I will try to get in touch with them for an official response. I believe FCg tried and they never responded. Will do though.

wreckage your need to speak in superlatives is somewhat showing.

No cookie for you
I think a witch hunt is gonna be called

And I have no idea what the fsck you see wrong with the contest. I don't see it as a lottery, it's a contest. It's not forcing you to enter or to buy anything.

You stand alone man, all alone. So why not stop trolling the video forum?

haha it's ok. I don't mind being so alone. Many mentioned that I was correct in this thread but I guess it's convenient of you to ignore them.

By all means try witch hunting me. idk how that would even occur? pm a mod if you feel so insulted by this thread. Never asked you to simply insult.

If you could actually back up anything you said it'd be great. you attempted it with "I don't see it as a lottery, it's a contest. It's not forcing you to enter or to buy anything." Lotteries also don't force you to enter and whether or not it's a contest or lottery in your eye it's a lottery as defined by state law. Also you must have bought something to get into the contest. Well Steal would work as well.

edit: Creig, Spittledip, Nitro, Josh have all mentioned that I was atleast right to bring this to attention.

*skims through thread*

Me=Tired right now. k?

I googled "Illegal Lottery New York State" and got nothing. I'm trying to search for some law, but I'm getting nothing here. So help me out.

I do see your side, don't get me wrong, I (personally) don't see them doing anything wrong. I have no proof since google seems to not be working right now and you might very well be right.

But is there a national law on this? This so called "lottery" spans the nation so is there any laws really against it? (or is a state law good enough?)

And I don't see how it fits either of these definitions:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lottery

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lottery

Is there another definition of a lottery?

It's all fun and games. I'm not disagreeing with you.
And I was kidding around with the witch hunt thing. It was Sarcasm. See the little "" sign?

bleh say what you mean. Sarcasm online is like hearing when deaf. but yeah I should've got that.

Well I believe it's the state that bans lotteries not any federal ruling though most states have this I'm almost sure. If you review my post on the 2nd page with the links it'll usually have a section to define the terms used. ie. my example that in California's penal code a contest requires both skill and chance whereas a lottery is only chance. Sweepstakes is also defined.

I'm not really bothered by this but just brought it to attention. What bothered me is the nvidia fanboys who took this as an insult to them. Still your previous post refers to me as a troll heh not that I really care.

jw but... just read wreckages post before and then look at my response. did he just pretend it's me in other threads?

Lottery = purchase of tickets specifically for a chance to win a prize. The tickets themselves hold no value.

The difference here is that a video card/SLI mobo is not a ticket, because it has inherent value.

However, Nvidia should either remove the "No purchase necessary" disclaimer (since they are requiring a purchase) or include a way for people to enter the contest without requiring a purchase.

Think of it this way - The McDonalds/Best Buy Monopoly game was not a lottery. Buying a large fry or a large coke got you game pieces (tickets) but the food itself was what held the value you paid for (even though there was no nutritional value ) - you weren't buying the tickets themselves. The difference between the two was that for the Monopoly game, you could fill out a SASE to receive two free game pieces. Nvidia is not offering that chance. So the argument here should be shifting from whether or not Nvidia is holding an illegal lottery (they aren't) to whether or not Nvidia is required by law to allow anyone to enter the contest with an SASE. That is something I don't know the answer to.
