Is this fake news or real?

https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-says-illegal-immigration-mexico-declined-last-month-024436969.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States from Mexico declined by 40 percent from January to February, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said on Wednesday.

The downturn came after President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20 vowing to deport many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

The flow of illegal border crossings as measured by apprehensions and the prevention of inadmissible persons at the southern border dropped to 18,762 persons in February from 31,578 in January, Kelly said in a statement.

He said the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which compiled the data, historically sees a 10 percent to 20 percent increase in apprehensions of illegal immigrants from January to February.

On Jan. 25, Trump ordered the construction of a wall along the roughly 2,000-mile (3,200-km) U.S.-Mexico border, moved to strip federal funding from "sanctuary" states and cities that harbor illegal immigrants, and expanded the force of U.S. immigration agents.

"Since the administration's implementation of Executive Orders to enforce immigration laws, apprehensions and inadmissible activity is trending toward the lowest monthly total in at least the last five years," Kelly said.

Is this real or fake? It's hard to tell what's real and what's fake anymore from the news media. If it is real though, then it looks like Trump's iron fisted method may actually be working.

There's also been a steady flow of immigrants escaping north into Canada.

Strange as it sounds, most humans don't prefer to escape into demonstrably fascist plutocracies. There is definitely some negative influence on immigration there, illegal or otherwise.

Oh, also tourism is taking a dump:

That could mean two things. Either there's really a 40% drop in illegal immigration, which would be fantastic, or there's just a 40% reduction in apprehensions because the enforcement agencies are doing less. The former is more likely. If so, great job Trump, fantastic results, especially in such a short amount of time --- despite all the efforts by the sanctuary cities and other scumbags to undermine the work.

Hey, if there are idiots that view the US that way, then by all means, let them go elsewhere. Win win, I'd say. I don't care what their reason is, the bottom line is we have better control of our borders.

Just about the entire world views America that way. We are the most hated nation in the world and for good reason. The amount of hell on earth America has unleashed in the Middle East is an affront. That combined with America's complete loss of democratic principles leave little to admire about it. Given that the government is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the 1%ers (brazenly showcased by Trump's presidency), it should take no more than a generation or two before all manufacturing, engineering and innovation will be done in Asia or Europe. Thankfully when that happens, America will lose the military power to run around ruining the rest of the word. Unfortunately another country will rise up to take up that position.

And yes I would love nothing better than to leave America. If I were only a young man, the option would be a no brainer.

35% of America's engineers are foreign born Asians (a demographic shift that occurred in my lifetime). Americans are increasingly no longer producing innovations, they are hiring better educated people from other countries to do that. It is a temporary condition, the natural place for that innovation is in the home countries of the engineers doing the innovation.

LOL, your candidate losing an election does not equal "complete loss of democratic principles." Nominate a candidate who isn't terrible next time and you'll likely win. Running Hillary Clinton was completely on you.

Clinton was part of the plutocracy. Trump has turned out even more plutocratic than her. In a plutocracy, the voters are only allowed to vote for a plutocrat from either party. It is a false choice, you are voting for either one corporate shill or the other. In any case the person elected will represent monied interests and won't give a tinkers damn about the general population. That is the entire point of plutocracy.

Or, I don't view the world through democrat-glasses and don't think the sky is falling and Trump is Hitler and other such drivel. If people want to believe such nonsense, that's fine. If that nonsensical belief keeps illegals out, even better.

Now if only we could get all those celebs who said they'd go to Canada or some other country if Trump won to actually honor their word, we'd be rid of a whole lot of trash!

"Only allowed"? Huh, I must have missed the part where millions of registered Democrats were forced at gunpoint to cast primary votes for her.

Illegal immigration has been dropping for years. I'm at work and it's been reported and talked about too many times before on this forum for me to bother searching out the same links.

Overall it may have been going down but in the past, just between January and February, according to the article, the numbers trended up.

He said the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which compiled the data, historically sees a 10 percent to 20 percent increase in apprehensions of illegal immigrants from January to February.

So if this actually keeps up, then maybe we will see a dramatically drop in illegal immigration this year, which everyone can celebrate.

Try and run primary schools in America like they do in South Korea or Japan and watch the lawsuits pile up as the special snowflakes and their parents cry child abuse.

No question America is despised in the middle east. A few (IMO) legitimate reasons exist for that.

I'm not sure about being the most hated the world over though.

There are still an exorbitant amount of people voluntarily migrating to America.

Is this like Reagan worshippers crediting him for the release of the hostages in Iran because he was so rough & tough?

Net illegal immigration from Mexico has been negative since 2008, btw. Whatever their reasons, more have been leaving than coming in, anyway.

According to that source, they're measuring changes of illegal immigration by looking at changes in the overall illegal population, and attribute a lot of that due to increased deportations. Not the same thing as Mexicans choosing not to even attempt entering at a lower rate.

Anyone ever read 1984? It's a darn good book, but it's a while ago since I read it.

Anyway, in "1984", the regime uses a tactic where they frequently inform the citizens about glorious advances in whatever battles on whatever fronts. Like, people watch on the news that the forces now finally took region X or Y back, followed by glorious applause because it was such an achievement. Of course, in the book, these news were all made-up, propaganda for their own people. But this is not the point I want to make.

The point is that nothing in the lives of the people changed, despite constantly exposed to these oh-so-glorious news. These news were entirely meaningless. The people still lived shitty lives, they still lived in shitty homes, they were still monitored, no free speech etc.

And I see a parallel there, since, EVEN IF WE ASSUME THIS IS REAL (which I sure don't since I wouldn't trust a single word from this administration), even if we assume it's real it's entirely meaningless unless the reduction of illegal immigration has an actual benefit on people's lives. Did less illegals REALLY reduce crime in your area? Did it create more jobs? Did it help you make more money, live better, get healthier, whatever? You get the idea. Until then, you can print these news on paper and wipe your ass with them, because they're not worth more.

It seems reasonable. Its common when negative policies are enacted towards a population, there will be a pretty immediate impact on that populations desire to immigrate to that country. Usually these impacts are temporary, as the shock of the new policies typically isn't sustainable. We'll have to wait and see what the long term consequences are.

Trump can continue selling us out to Russia and dismantling our federal government as long as I don't have to worry about illegals taking all the best jobs anymore.

Illegal immigration is a lagging indicator tied to the job market overall. That's why the number of illegal immigrants dropped in 2009, 2010, 2011. The job market right now is not tanking as it was then, a 40% decrease in just a couple of months, if true, would be a staggering change.
