Tollway officials said 15 public hearings across the area showed strong support for their expansion plans.

Of those speaking at the hearings, 81 percent favored the expansion, while 88 percent of those submitting written comments supported the capital plan, according to tollway statistics.

So in other words they listened to the people and are doing something the people want that favors the people and will create jobs for the people. You were right about one thing, that is exactly what a liberal paradise is like.

The Illinois Tollway board on Thursday approved a steep 87 percent toll increase to pay for a massive $12 billion plan to rebuild, widen, expand and overhaul much of the system’s 286 miles of highways.

You use the tollway, you have to pay for the tollway.

Would you prefer paying for roads via property tax increases?

Just saying...

How else are they supposed to pay for the "massive $12 billion plan to rebuild, widen, expand and overhaul much of the system’s 286 miles of highways"?

Checking the Illinois Tollway website:

Finance

The Illinois Tollway is a user financed administrative agency of the State of Illinois. The Illinois Auditor General performs a financial audit of the books of the Tollway for each Tollway fiscal year. This page offers links to Tollway financial statements and audits. Questions concerning these reports or requests for additional financial information should be directed to the Controller, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, 2700 Ogden Avenue, Downers Grove, Illinois 60515.

I'm just gonna leave this here...They are following in the footsteps of other states run by liberal democrats. " Hey, revenue is down, increase taxes! Wait, tax "revenue" is still declining, raise more taxes/fees. Crap! Why tax revenue keep dropping when we keep raising it? "

http://www.illinoispolicy.org/news/article.asp?ArticleSource=4362

In a trend that continues to worsen, more Illinoisans found themselves unemployed in the month of July.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover. But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year. Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline.

Clearly as their liberal paradise has created a jobs with a higher unemployment than the national avg of 9.5%.

The BLS data doesn't bear that out.

I'm sure Metra and it's supporters came in their pants...along with the Unions - maybe they came in each others pants?

That being said, if they will build these properly, then I don't mind the toll increase so much - although I think it's quite large for all at once (and would say if I'm paying for my own roads, then the train riders should be paying for their own trains, which I thought ((although could very well be wrong)) are heavily tax subsidized).

The problem with IL is that they will spend a lot of money re-doing a road, take insanely long to do it (therefore causing large and sustained commuting issues), the road is choppy/bumpy/F'd up after they get all done spending that money and time on it, and then it's falling apart in 3 years.

Work 3 crews 8 hour shifts, along with all the supporting roles (if they want to bid on project, they have to support the shifts), bring in someone that can get roads built correctly (Autobahn folks, WhoeverTF), have knowledgable state inspectors (who have total authority) on-site the entire time making sure quality is going into the project, and then maybe there wouldn't be such backlash on these types of things.

I moved from the cesspool called IL earlier this year. My biggest problem was that I was legally not allowed to protect myself from all the violence. Now I open carry in IA to let everyone know I'm not the one with whom to f$%k.

I'm not understanding what's wrong with making people who use the tollways to pay for the work being done on them.

/glad he lives downstate.

but its about goddamn time they linked 57 and 294, now I wont have to cut through markham to avoid the hell that is the 80/294 split

but someof the people they talked to are really stupid

"It doesn’t just scream jobs, it screams sustainable jobs"

road construction should not be seem as 'sustainable jobs', thats how polluted the tri-county area is

oh well, more incentive to take the train to downtown and suckle that gov-subsidized tit that is amtrak instead of dealing with driving

*sigh*

You're all shouting based on ideological stances, against "the other side".

Illinois toll-roads are *always* under construction, we have long since given up on any tollway project actually improving the commute. Article first mentions the Jane Addams Tollway, which is the one I have to take if I want to drive into Chicago, the interstate has been under construction for 8 of the past 10 years. It was adding more toll lanes, then adding one ipass lane, then adding an extra lane for a short while after the toll booths, then adding more ipass lanes, then resurfacing long stretches of the road, then adding ipass express lanes, then more resurfacing & bridge repairs, they're resurfacing another stretch and adding another lane currently, and now we're raising tolls to keep it under construction for longer.

Not to mention, I never felt the toll-road surfaces were bad. All over Illinois towns some roads get resurfaced, then another project comes along and resurfaces the same road a year or two later!!!

So much money can be saved by working on larger-scale projects at once, instead if lots and lots on continuous small projects, and that way we would actually get to benefit from time to time. But, reality is a whole other beast

This is true the roads especially around Chicago are ALWAYS in a state of terminal road construction. I have to admit they greatly improved the I90-94 corridor to Indiana. What really sucked about 5 years ago it took me 4.5 hours to get through Chicago when they were working on that stretch

Il toll roads are a joke. They are already very expensive and just raised them a few years ago.

For the amount it makes you would think the roads would be amazing. nope they fucking suck. only place i have seen worse roads was the Pennsylvania turnpike.

wow that article is full of spin.

While tolls have increased for those that don’t use I-PASS, the increase is the first hike in 28 years in the base rate paid by 75 percent of all tollway drivers.

lol what a crock of shit.

great so with IPASS you now pay around $3 every what 30 miles of tolway? and those without ipass pay around $5-6?

Friend... you have a long way to go until you can call your state a legitimate "liberal paradise":

http://www.mtc.ca.gov/tolls/

Not sure of your point. We have bridge tolls here in CA like everywhere else. However, we don't have any toll roads that I know of. I was surprised when I first went out to visit my wife's family in Ohio years back that I had to pay to travel on certain highways. I'd never heard of that before.
