Illinois leadership proposes a higher tax on alcohol. Will higher taxation in Illinois ever stop?

Holy crap just when you thought Illinois taxes couldn't get any higher the Governors Office has proposed a higher tax on beer wine, and spirits. Jesus Christ when will politicians in this state realize you can't tax your way out of debt it just doesn't work. Fiscal reform at all levels of government is what is needed but the leading political party in Illinois just won't do it.

The proposal would increase the excise per-gallon tax on beer, wine and spirits in Illinois. The tax on beer would go up 20 percent, and for wine and spirits, the tax would go up 47 percent. The 20 percent for beer is only about 5 cents more per gallon, but brewers say every cent adds up.

It's always the liberal state way. When it doubt, tax more. Fuck the middle and lower class, they can take another reaming. Nevermind that they are home to the most homeless people in the nation.

High fuel excise tax resulting in $5/gallon fill up? No prob! Soda tax? Sure! Plastic bag tax (which ironically contributes to more pollution having the opposite affect)? ABSOLUTELY! Highest sales tax in the nation? Oh yeah bby. Cherry on top is high income and high property taxes galore.

What more will they screw their residents with next?

OMG, this is going to make everyone who drinks beer poorer. Currently the tax is 23 cents a gallon and it's going up 28 cents? The horror! I'll grant that the wine increase is huge but even that is a bit over $2 a gallon. Not a show stopper in my book.

Wank some more about high taxes, I'm not seeing them.

Quoted for lying and trolling..

Highest sales tax rates
  • The five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.47 percent), Louisiana (9.45 percent), Arkansas (9.43 percent), Washington (9.17 percent), and Alabama (9.14 percent).

From the article I posted.
"We're already taxed four different times on the same batch of beer from federal level, state, city and county as well," said Haymarket Beer Company Director of Operations Michael Gemma. "There are really only two ways for businesses like ours to handle this. You can either absorb the tax into your profit or you can pass it on to the consumer."

It may not seem like a lot to you but I'm guessing you're not a business owner.

You're cherry picking broceritops. Chicago, IL is 10.25% - higher than all the ones you mentioned.

Also - Sales tax isn't the end-all be all of tax, you see? Nevermind, you're dumb and too stupid to see.

So I'll explain it for others that aren't dumb: The majority of states in the US gravitate around 2 of 3 tax types.

1) Income Tax
2) Property Tax
3) Sales Tax

The majority of REASONABLE states do not have high taxes in those 3 categories, but rather 2 out of the 3. Liberal states are high in all 3.

For example here in TX we have an 8.25% (capped, no local jurisdictions can overrule or go higher than this amount) with 6.25% reserved for the state.
We also have a high property tax rate, at something averaging around 2% or so. The difference? We don't buy $1.5m properties here. We buy $100-400k properties. 2% on 1.5m is different than 2% on $250k
And of course, we have nothing in state income tax.

Not every state does it the same way, for example - New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Delaware have no state sales tax.

EDIT: And Yes, Chicago, IL is the 100% winner (tied with Long Beach, CA) for highest sales tax rate in the nation. I didn't lie in the slightest detective dipshit.

You are a complete and total liar just like on taxes where you said only the top 10% itemize. You have lost the trust of everyone on the forum.

10% do itemize - once again, you're detective dipshit. Try doing research instead of twiddling your thumbs.

You're dumb. I'm sorry kid - but you're simply fucking dumb. You have posted zero facts, and you tell yourself what you want to believe.

You stated ONLY the TOP 10% itemize, you were proven wrong in that thread.

I guess the OP should move to a state with cheaper taxes.

Actually, you would be wrong about that. Sole proprietor, Twenty-seven years now. It's just that I'm in Oregon and nobody notices us when it comes to taxes. How about Washington, where I moved from many years ago? Beer and wine are reasonable and hard stuff is $14.27 a gallon and that's not counting county and city taxes, which vary across the state. Consume it on-site and the taxes are even higher.

It's more fun to pick on Illinois because Democrats but the fact is that taxes are all over the place. While conservatives like to blame Seattle for making Washington liberal, most of the rest of the state is conservative. It's just that those conservatives that are elected don't mind the high taxes either.

They get to spend it. Too.

Seriously bro? That's like saying "If you don't agree with me get the hell out of my country!".
Moving to a different state is NOT an option. Change has to be made from within by the people who live, work, and try to prosper here.

Oh ok so you have a sole proprietorship in Oregon. This thread is about Illinois and the taxes the state leadership levies against the residents who live there.

Lol, you're going to grapple with arguing that "10% itemize" vs. "top 10% itemize"? Really? Way to move the goal posts detective dipshit. As you can clearly see above, Indus thinks that MORE than 10% itemize.

Itemization is a direct correlation of income you fool.

Yup, and they really aren't that much to complain about but don't think I'm trying to stop you. I just wanted some hard data out there so everyone can see what you are complaining about.

Move to Washington state... then you'll have something to complain about if you drink hard liquor. Beer and wine taxes are low though!

I would be concerned if the taxes on food were going up but this is for products that have alcohol in them. A substance that is legally enjoyed by many but causes considerable harm to our country in a variety of ways. Remember, alcohol and cigarette taxes have always been seen as "sin taxes", with pious Christians jacking up the rates as an excuse to raise government funds at the expense of the "sinners". Hell, I pay a 20% tax on weed purchases here. You don't see me bitching out it, do you? Most of the people who bitch about California (or Illinois) don't even live there...lol! They just want to point at what they see as liberal states screwing everybody.

Try Texas...no taxes but there are fees are on every damned thing you do. I have family there and they have a love/hate relationship with that.

I proved in that thread that a person making less than 50K was itemizing, so you were proven wrong, so called tax expert.

I believe that a primary failing of Democrats, and a real problem they have, is that they do not have a solid record of serving the public good in the public's opinion. That can arise from two factors that I can see, a failure to actually produce, and or, a failure to demonstrate the benefits they do achieve such as to create public believers. It is human nature to think of yourself before you think of others when the obvious danger of that attitude isn't addressed and countered from a young age. Democrats need to produce and to sell the benefits or lose elections. Who wants just a bit better than what Republicans offer.

Since it is a pretty solid Blue State, those chances seem slim. Even their former Republican Governor couldn't change it. Guess you'll have to live with it.
