Holy crap just when you thought Illinois taxes couldn't get any higher the Governors Office has proposed a higher tax on beer wine, and spirits. Jesus Christ when will politicians in this state realize you can't tax your way out of debt it just doesn't work. Fiscal reform at all levels of government is what is needed but the leading political party in Illinois just won't do it.

In related news, Walmart has reported that every single HomeBrew Beer Making Kit was sold in less than 30 minutes. No less than 500 customers have requested that one of those on backorder be held for them.

It's more fun to pick on Illinois because Democrats but the fact is that taxes are all over the place. While conservatives like to blame Seattle for making Washington liberal, most of the rest of the state is conservative. It's just that those conservatives that are elected don't mind the high taxes either.

They get to spend it. Too.

People downstate here love to complain in the same way. That all their problems would be solved if they could get rid of evil Chicago which (though the dark sorcery of demographics and voting) controls the state. Never mind that they'd be dead fucking broke if they actually succeeded.

Current Illinois excise tax on beer $0.23 per gallon
Current Florida excise tax on beer $0.48 per gallon

Not a lot of beer sympathy for you down here in FL.

I'm curious, do you live in Illinois? Wondering about your "concern" for that state's taxes.

BTW - Juxtapose Illinois with Kansas.

Doubtful. The blue states are going to be facing some very deep financial issues. One is the benefits and pensions given to civil servants 20-30 some years ago. Thiose people are retiring or are already retired, and they are living for 25 plus years. Puts a lot of strain on the people who live in those states. I live in NJ and we are facing the same issue. Well what's the answer? You could tax people until they get tired of being taxed and leave. The other option is to make marijuana legal. But, many legislatures are set against this idea. Especially Republicans. In NJ, it's legal to distribute weed but it's tied up with so much red tape. I don't know if it will actually become law.

As an individual, if you're tired of being taxed the only option is to move. Go to greener pastures. The amount of taxes that you're spending you could put that money into investments. Invest in yourself. That's what I did. The money I made teaching overseas I invested all of it. That includes the money that I've would had paid on taxes. You figure it's 28% on your income. I paid ZERO. That 28% went straight into my investments. I know that most people aren't going to move overseas. BUt, you can move to another state that has low taxes.

I can just drive to wisconsin to buy beer, though they don't have a very good whisky selection, and holy shit they have a LOT of brandy for sale.

Meh, taxing alcohol seems like a no brainer. Public costs associated with alcohol stack up quickly. Looks like IL isnt the highest in the country anyways.

So much bitching...

I'm eagerly awaiting OP's bitching thread on Illinois Fair Tax proposal that would change state tax from flat to graduated and how it'll hurt millionaires so bad...

Taxing weed doesn't always pan out. Here in CA the state collected about half of what they expected. Illegal weed is cheaper.

You stated ONLY the TOP 10% itemize, you were proven wrong in that thread.

I guess the OP should move to a state with cheaper taxes.

He's a paid propaganda troll... Spreading lies and disinformation is his job... put the lyi sack of shit on ignore... Another mole will pop up...

Lol beer basic and volume tax is 17.4 cent per litre. 65.7 per US Gallon for the metric challenged. On top of that are other taxes.

Zero sympathy from me. I don't even drink.

Agreed. Plus isn't it odd the the trolls that always bring up cigarettes when its convenient never speak out about alcohol?

Tax the living shit out if both. Most Americans will only be positively affected by it.

Degenerates will be the onky ones suffering...

Lol, you're going to grapple with arguing that "10% itemize" vs. "top 10% itemize"? Really? Way to move the goal posts detective dipshit. As you can clearly see above, Indus thinks that MORE than 10% itemize.

Itemization is a direct correlation of income you fool.

Here's exactly what you said, and both the bold font and the capitalization are yours :

"Again I state: IF YOU ITEMIZE YOU ARE IN THE TOP 10%.That is fact you moron."

Nothing about 10% itemize. Only that the top 10% itemize. Despite your protestations to the contrary, the 2 statements are NOT interchangeable. Not their wording, not their meaning. The only goalpost moving being done is by you. You might want to think a bit longer before throwing around terms like fool, dipshit and moron. Just saying.

Didn't Chris Christie claim to save 120 billion by pension reform and stick it to the democrats?

Oh that's right.. he just ate $1000 lunches and had cops privatize beaches so he could sunbathe but he never solved any problems.. he only created them!

So while I disagree with a lot in this thread, I will say I am leaving IL and am happy about it. We had a R governor (Rauner) but he sucked, we have a ancient D speaker who owns all and runs a property tax appeal firm so he LOVES the property taxes here. The pension funding is so fucked but no one will fix it.

I like the state, I hate the way it's run and there is plenty of blame all around.

Good on you. I am leaving Michigan next year. The GOP has destroyed the Midwest for decades to come. When the minority party continues to usurp our democracy those with the means will move somewhere where Democracy and The Constitution are still valued and followed. These abandoned States can house all the America hating traitors and the eventual internment camps AFAIK

My property taxes have increased from about $4000 a year to $5400 in eight years.

Has anyone other state in the country experienced such a rise in such a short time?

What happened to the property value? Did the mill levy increase?

I am not aware that the assessed value of my home has increased in the past 8 years. The city increased it by about $15000 but that was pretty much right after I bought it. The assessor didn't even come in to my house. She asked me some questions at the front door. The one I remember was "Is your basement equipped for a spare bedroom?". I tried to be honest and said "yes", because there is a room down there I use for storage that has an egress window. The next thing I know the assessed value jumped.

Its a shame that alcohol isn't taxed for its full externalities like it should be.

There should be a progressive tax on it, so that sure you can have a beer or glass of wine, but it should quickly ratchet up from there.
