For those without photoshop, just print out the picture and then cut it up so that you can manually place A next to B to prove they're the same color.

I've seen demonstrations of this opitcal illusion before but this one is the best by far because there was such a large illusionary difference in birghtness between A & B.

or just use paint...

Too many people overlook this simple but highly useful application thats free with windows.

we never see things as they really are. the eye is built so that it works by comparing colors and shades, not by saying like "this is 255 red, 255 blue, 255 green"

it's more like "this one is lighter than this other one"... etc.

it's all very complicated, and all the interesting things in optical illusions happens in the cortex of the brain. it's really interesting stuff.

The easiest way to explain it is the surround colors fool your eye. I used Red to cover up some of the surrounding squares and make it all one color. I'm thinking because mainly different shades of grey are being shot at you, you're eye thinks they are different colors.
