I had a really close friend drown this summer. I usually swim in the mornings before school, I haven't done it since.

I've always hated the water, and I'm not what I'd call a great swimmer, but no, I have no fear that if I fall in a pool or ocean that I will drown.

tough up and learn, i did when i was around your age.
first breast stroke, then freestyle, back stroke and butterfly are coming along.
i didn't get a coach, i got some advice and watched some videos instead.
do get a pair of goggles, and you have to drink a lot of pool water before you learned.

If it makes OP feel any better, though I have been swimming my whole life and use to teach swimming, I could never do a butterfly to save my life.

I finally gave up trying to learn it when I graduated from college.

Definitely! High school swimming is kind of crushing my life right now. Butterfly kills, don't feel bad motionman.

butterfly is hard i have to say, i just experimented with it but i couldn't get the 2nd kick in and my form is definitely off.

but seriously, everyone should at least know how to float unless you will never get near deep water.

How does one know that one will never get near water deep enough to drown in?

Wow, you mean someone, you specifically, actually watched Waterworld? I figured it was like Ishtar where no one truely knows if it is a bad movie because no one has ever watched it.

Butterfly is the toughest. Sidestroke would be a good starter, that and dog paddle, which is basically just staying in one place. Back is easiest and most fun. Crawl is the fastest and the one I'd be using if I were swimming in an emergency situation. Also known as the Australian Crawl.

I think my parents tried to get rid of me.
I was a strong swimmer when I was a kid. If I went to the beach I would go way out, let the current take me a mile or so down the beach, and I got a jeep ride back to my parents blanket/umbrella setup.
Also, rip tides would weaken in-experienced swimmers to the point where people would need the life guard to swim them back in.
I remember once a couple was swimming next to me and they couldn't make it back on shore. I must have been 6 or 7. I kept telling them just to swim along the beach until it gets easier. When the lifegaurds came out, they said to get the kid first. They just replied, "don't worry about him, he's a local boy that knows what he is doing."

Are you kidding me? Waterworld got a bad rap because it cost so much to make. If you watch the movie without that in mind, you can enjoy it as much as I do. I have watched all or most of it at least 20 times.

Waterworld rocks.

Are you black??? A high percentage of black people cannot swim. This is a fact. No need for mod pwnage.

It's probably because a high percentage of them have low income and can't afford to attend recreational facilities that involve swimming. Besides how much money they have they are less apt to have mainstream lifestyles. It's part of looking different in a culture in which it's usual to be in some kind of minority (the US). Anyway, similarly, probably relatively few black Americans know how to ride a horse. Or are into mountain climbing or skiing or surfing.

This was the same for me. My family was very poor, being recent immigrants and stuff. We didn't live close to any natural bodies of water and didn't have the time or money to give me swimming lessons. I remember attending two swimming lessons as a kid at a nearby college, but those lessons ended abruptly for reasons I do not know

On the same vein, never did horseback riding, mountain climbing, skiing, or board sports as a kid because we just never had financial access to them and these activities did not mesh with Chinese culture.

Basically, all of the above activities are now up to me to go out and learn as an adult.

I think the Mongol's might have a different view about that

Agreed, except for the 20 times part, I've only seen it twice. It is nowhere near as bad as people think.

Took swimming lessons at a young age (probably around 5 or 6). I swim on a regular basis and can easily swim a mile. I have also been a trained BSA lifeguard (at the tender age of 40).

Wow that's really strange. You go in deep water in the pool and never learned to swim or tread water?

Speaking of which, people that say they can't swim, can you at least tread water? That's the first thing you need to learn is how to stay afloat. Doggie paddle, backfloat, tread water. Doesn't take more then an hour to learn this.

Anybody else out there my age and can't swim?

Many people don't learn to swim when they are a child for one reason or another so yes I think it would be a good idea if you learned to swim.
