I wouldn't even consider them if it wasn't a hot deal. On the other hand, I'd feel like a chump if I went through the trouble and expense of building my own, and they had a hot deal available as soon as mine was completed. This is usually how it goes... :|Originally posted by: Crono
Yeah, but their super crazy deals don't come around that often... at least not any more.

Heh, You think your going to get a perfectly stable, working condition system from dell? BUahaha, I've had more problems trying to get my dell systems running smoothly (that means not crashing) than systems I've built. The dell systems I have (their laptops are even worse) suffer wierd glitches and all sorts of other problems that really piss me off that I can't seem to figure out as to their cause. I hate dell, they build POS systems, they used to be good but now are garbage.
Sheesh, calling me a kiddie. I've been working with computers for about a decade now, don't call ME a kiddie... I just can't recommend dell especially how much their support and quality of hardware has tanked. The current system I have (Abit IC7-G, P4 2.8@3.5, 1GB ram, R9800pro) is more stable than any dell I've EVER had.
The most stable dell I had was an XPS R450 and was a gem, ran very quickly but was one in a million because every other dell (even in the same series) was painfully slow. The memory scores were like 710MB/s while an R400 my mom has had a memory score of 345 or something MB/s... A T850 my friend had also had an abysmal score of around 300MB/s as well. I just couldn't figure it out why there was such a huge discrepancy in performance between systems and I've concluded that it's simply the motherboard, showing you that it's one of the most important peices of hardware, next to the PSU.
And those were systems from 1998-2000 (T850 was 2000), my latest and LAST dell is a Dimension 8200 from late 2001, P4 1.7 and it's really unreliable. I haven't had as much trouble with this system as I've ever had with any other system. ATM it's suppose to be a HTPC but it's out of commission because the time required to get it working agian would be immense, I plan to get it working once I get my entertainment centre+TV.

Hm...440LX chipset vs. 440BX or 440ZX or something? I've only had one dell that was even remotely new and that was somekind of dimension with a P4 1.5 and 512MB SDRAM. I got for $50, so it was worth it.

All he's looking for is a simple new machine, you can't beat the price for a Dell. I've got a thousand or so Dell machines that say they're fine for just that and pretty damn reliable. If we want to talk about old machines, I just finally replaced a couple dozen dimension R450s for a client that were still chugging along fine with nary a hardware replacement in the group except for one set of dead PS/2 ports. They got replaced with more Dells, of course.

Made up? Nope, they're absolutely not made up. Why would I make up something like this? To bash dell? Well, I do have something positive to say, after spending four hours with dell on the phone because I thought my HDD failed, they sent me another one for free and turns out the drive was fine (so now I have 2 40GB HDDs).

PS CTRL-ALT-D on bootup probably would've shaved 3.75 hours off that phonecall, bud.

Everyone speaks english (the Call center's in Texas) and they are actually somewhat competent on the tech.
When I've called Dell for my parents, on the otherhand, I've wanted to shoot myself in the head (insert standard Dell complaints here).

I wouldn't have touched any pre-built 5 years ago but eventually you grow out of the building/overclocking phase. It just doesn't interest me that much anymore, I don't have the time, energy, or even the DESIRE to deal with a home built these days.
I've owned an 8400 for nearly a year, it's been rock solid. I also purchased & used dozens of desktops + laptops at work - Rock solid there too, save for one that showed up with a bad hard drive (replaced overnight).
BTW for the "you can't play games" all but the lowest priced systems use standard video cards & you can put whatever you want in it. My 8400 came with a PCI-E 6800NU (NV41), it games just fine. Whenever it won't keep up anymore I'll simply replace it.
Once you outgrow playing with hardware Dell is a great choice. I would have to seriously question the knowledge of someone who can't keep a Dell stable.
