I'd definitely buy a Dell as my next computer. I've used (or worked on) tons of them and never have many problems at all. Everyone I know I recommend Dell and none of them have ever had a problem either.

my 3rd epox board burnt out (3 in 2, 2.5 years) yesterday morning... I'm thinking about it.
But the only thing holding me back is that the small system they sell doesn't (can't) take any desktop video cards. I mean, at least option it to fit a notebook video card.
I might just make the jump to a mac mini, depending on when it comes out and what type of video it has onboard. I mean, I can always spend that money on a video card for an xbox360/ps3/revolution

edit: i have a dell 700m. extremely stable, reliable, and ok at playing last generations games.

Get better parts, and go Intel for stability. AMD has always had "issues" between the processor and motherboard.

Few people care about Intel boards as they don't OC if at all, but they're damn stable (and have one of the best customer service of any MB manufacturers -- next day air replacements!).

Through all my time working in PC repair, I have seen plenty of HPs, Gateways, etc. with dead parts, but never a Dell. Every one I worked on was always a virus/spyware issue. They're good systems and I'd recommend them if you don't want to build.

Maybe I'll just look into a cheap ~$100 barebones pc w/ case and mobo and drop everything else in and pray for the best.

I hate dell, they build POS systems, they used to be good but now are garbage.
Here come the kiddies.

Sheesh, calling me a kiddie. I've been working with computers for about a decade now, don't call ME a kiddie... I just can't recommend dell especially how much their support and quality of hardware has tanked. The current system I have (Abit IC7-G, P4 2.8@3.5, 1GB ram, R9800pro) is more stable than any dell I've EVER had.

The most stable dell I had was an XPS R450 and was a gem, ran very quickly but was one in a million because every other dell (even in the same series) was painfully slow. The memory scores were like 710MB/s while an R400 my mom has had a memory score of 345 or something MB/s... A T850 my friend had also had an abysmal score of around 300MB/s as well. I just couldn't figure it out why there was such a huge discrepancy in performance between systems and I've concluded that it's simply the motherboard, showing you that it's one of the most important peices of hardware, next to the PSU.

And those were systems from 1998-2000 (T850 was 2000), my latest and LAST dell is a Dimension 8200 from late 2001, P4 1.7 and it's really unreliable. I haven't had as much trouble with this system as I've ever had with any other system. ATM it's suppose to be a HTPC but it's out of commission because the time required to get it working agian would be immense, I plan to get it working once I get my entertainment centre+TV.

Aren't you somewhere around 15 years old?

Hm...440LX chipset vs. 440BX or 440ZX or something? I've only had one dell that was even remotely new and that was somekind of dimension with a P4 1.5 and 512MB SDRAM. I got for $50, so it was worth it.

Believe it or not, but all of those systems were running on the 440BX chipset.

A couple made up benchmarks and a whole bunch of vague statements about some old machines. That's nice.

All he's looking for is a simple new machine, you can't beat the price for a Dell. I've got a thousand or so Dell machines that say they're fine for just that and pretty damn reliable. If we want to talk about old machines, I just finally replaced a couple dozen dimension R450s for a client that were still chugging along fine with nary a hardware replacement in the group except for one set of dead PS/2 ports. They got replaced with more Dells, of course.

Made up? Nope, they're absolutely not made up. Why would I make up something like this? To bash dell? Well, I do have something positive to say, after spending four hours with dell on the phone because I thought my HDD failed, they sent me another one for free and turns out the drive was fine (so now I have 2 40GB HDDs).

Gotcha. You managed to pull those benchmarks straight from memory from 1998-2000.

PS CTRL-ALT-D on bootup probably would've shaved 3.75 hours off that phonecall, bud.

Don't listen to the kiddies.

I wouldn't have touched any pre-built 5 years ago but eventually you grow out of the building/overclocking phase. It just doesn't interest me that much anymore, I don't have the time, energy, or even the DESIRE to deal with a home built these days.

I've owned an 8400 for nearly a year, it's been rock solid. I also purchased & used dozens of desktops + laptops at work - Rock solid there too, save for one that showed up with a bad hard drive (replaced overnight).

BTW for the "you can't play games" all but the lowest priced systems use standard video cards & you can put whatever you want in it. My 8400 came with a PCI-E 6800NU (NV41), it games just fine. Whenever it won't keep up anymore I'll simply replace it.

Once you outgrow playing with hardware Dell is a great choice. I would have to seriously question the knowledge of someone who can't keep a Dell stable.

When I had some minor issues with my laptop, I was really impressed with their customer service. Out of 5 calls, average waiting time was 30 seconds, one call was excrusiatinly long at 3 minutes. Everyone speaks english (the Call center's in Texas) and they are actually somewhat competent on the tech.

When I've called Dell for my parents, on the otherhand, I've wanted to shoot myself in the head (insert standard Dell complaints here).

Wrong, do you really believe I benchmarked these systems in 1998-2000??? I benchmarked them LAST YEAR, this is why I could remember them. I didn't even know about si-soft sandra until about 2001.

Thanks for the post. Even if I dont end up with one now, I figure I'll probably get one whenever I return from the sandbox in like 2007. Whatever I have now will be ancient by then, and I'll have NO desire to maintain computers other then a rare part add.
