I wouldn't mind playing Bioshock Infinite, but afaik, it isn't on linux, and I'm not interested in any kind of drm, even velvet cuffs like steam. I want to pay my money, get my files, and not have any more interaction with the company aside from patches, which I'd then download, and file away.

I miss the old single player games with rich modding communities. Haven't been into games in awhile, but it seems like most modders focused on multiplayer in later years. It's a lot easier not having to deal with a story I guess. Make a map, and people just battle it out.

It's just okay but is worth a play-through .... the original games however are exponentially better!

A man chooses. A slave obeys!

*(Warning! ~ If you are THAT GUY who never played Bioshock, MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD!)

Better game in 1 .... better weapons (especially the hack darts!) in 2 IMO.

Both are tremendous overall though.... the remastered versions are free on Steam (and look great!) if you own the originals.

Unfortunately software isn't really even considered 'owned' anymore, just licenced for use. Steam really is the best of all worlds right this second for 'drm-lite' which was always inevitable. Even in the late 80's, the lawyers demanded that you at least have the game manual in front of you to install/run it. At least now most law depts are fine with hooking in to whatever steam offers.

Lots of modding available in the single player realm; elder scrolls 3-5, fo3/nv/4, Neverwinter nights will give you enough modding for a lifetime, or at least until the next ES game is released, trust me.

7th gen Intel and original Ryzen desktops? No thanks. Maybe great for third world countries as they will be able to ditch their Core 2/Nehalem/Sandy/Ivy Bridge/Bulldozer PCs.
I disagree, these were precisely the years when Intel rested on its laurels. While AMD was completely irrelevant (pre- Ryzen), there was little YoY performance increase from Intel and then they suffered through some years of struggles to get to 10nm. It took a lot of years of CPU releases to amount to a significant impact, and even then the typical consumer usage profile hasn't been CPU-bound for a while. The most important component transition for most users during this period was SSDs becoming mainstream.

There is very little technical reason that upon the release of Win11 in late 2021, that Microsoft had to make mainstream 2017 systems "obsolete." This broke with decades of tradition, and aligned more with Apple or mobile OS life cycles. (4 years is actually shorter than iPhoneOS support duration nowadays.) You and other enthusiasts may have no interest at this point in 2016-era PCs, but as @Kaido alluded to, good working hardware from this era meets the basic needs of many consumers just fine. Enthusiasts (and gamers) represent a fairly small portion of the entire market.

At least it's possible to install Win11 unsupported, and perhaps Microsoft won't ever "pull the carpet out" from underneath users that do so. People will probably figure out how to get Win10 updated beyond 2025 (as was the case with WinXP POSReady), as the IoT edition has long-term support.

I've been installing Tiny11 a lot lately (removes the TPM 2.0 & Secure Boot requirements). Only needs 2 gigs of RAM & 8GB of boot drive space! I keep testing it to see how it runs on older & older computers and on unique hardware, like those HDMI-stick Compute computers. Runs pretty good!

A quad-core Intel + 8GB RAM + SSD boot drive still serves the majority of people just fine (well, maybe 16GB for Chrome these days lol). I hate throwing away perfectly good hardware, so Tiny11 is a great way to get some extra life out of older stuff!

This times 100! Multiplayer even had modding enabled, but hackers got too good at using modded clients to hack the servers. This is why we don’t have nice stuff.

Multiplayer/online has mostly ruined RPG's/story-driven games.

The only reason lazy-a$$ game developers are so gung-ho on all the garbage multiplayer crap is that (in their minds at least) they can get by without a good plot. Also it helps disguise $hit content/AI opponents by hiding them behind PvP.

Speaking for myself I will NEVER pay for a compromised "online" RPG again.

Be advised that as of 2 weeks ago the Win 10 "free upgrade" absolutely still works with any Win 7/8 key. *(except "starter" versions)

I've done:

1. Old PC (no TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot) with WIn7
2. Free upgrade to Win10
3. Tiny11 fresh install (activates using key or digital entitlement from the upgrade)

Tiny11 doesn't really update or anything, but you can throw on a lifetime license of Malwarebytes & be good to go for another few years on older hardware!

Do you find that "Tiny 11" has any significant advantage over Win 10 on older PC's? (beyond the longer support-period)

If so I'll keep in in mind for my backup PC. (FX-8350)

So far, it seems zippier! Win10 really likes a minimum of 4 gigs of RAM, but 2 gigs isn't bad on Tiny11! Both prefer SSD's. Fun to play with, give it a shot! You can get a 480gb SSD for like $26 these days:

I've got a pile of old hardware to try out. The biggest requirement is that the machine has to be 64-bit capable, so like older 32-but Atom chips are out, but the slightly newer 64-bit Atom chips are in (ex. the newer Compute stick knockoffs). Tiny11 exists for sort of the "recycling older 64-bit hardware niche" because you can buy stuff like this now for the same cost as a few upgrade parts for older machines:

* $150 after coupon
* Triple HDMI
* Double Ethernet
* Includes Win11 Pro 64-bit (which costs $159, which is more than the computer lol) & also runs Linux
* 4-core 2ghz (2.9ghz turbo) 10nm Intel CPU
* 8GB RAM
* 256gb M.2 SSD
* 15w power usage
* 2.4ghz/5ghz dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac wireless
* Bluetooth 4.2
* Triple USB 3.0 ports
* Fits in the palm of your hand (plug into a TV, older monitors, etc...27" 1080p monitors are down to nearly a hundred bucks these days)

If you don't mind used, there are plenty of really decent compact computers on Amazon for under $99:

I hate throwing away perfectly good hardware, so anything I can do to save someone some cash & extend out their computer life for a few more years so it doesn't end up in a landfill is A+!

Once your firmware is up to date, Samsung Magician is no longer useful. Case closed.
Well, it will analyze your storage. I have done that but maybe a 2nd run could be useful? There must be some reason they are continually "updating" it.

Speaking of software updates, I am still refusing to install W11 on my W10 laptops. I saw something a couple days ago about MS announcing W12 and that it would NOT be a free "upgrade."

That's fine as long as they make Win10 the baseline free version for people with basic computing/gaming needs and a paid version for people who love frivolous frills.
