WE LIVE IN AMERICA, IT'S CALLED CHRISTMAS.

I am not religious for the record but I think this politically correct crap is idiotic and ridiculous. I am sad to see that commercials, TV, etc are still using the term 'Holiday' from last year.

Anyone else agree this is stupid?

I agree with you, and so does the majority of the population.

Really? The majority posting in this thread are saying otherwise. Do you have some stats backing up your claims? Where are you getting this info from?

You do realize that the majority of the folks here on the Anandtech forums, and specifically Off-Topic, do not believe in any form of religion, right? This is definitely not a place to get an unbiased opinion on anything relating to religion, especially Christianity.

Actually, nobody can offer unbiased opinions about religion.
People usually have the strongest bias towards their own religion.
Now, nonreligious people usually base their bias on fact based scientific theory rather than faith with no provable facts.

So, if you want an unbiased opinion about Christianity, there is no place, but the bias here is probably weaker than most places. If you ask at a baptist forum, you'll get a very strong bias. If you ask at a muslim forum, you'll get a different very strong bias.

If you have time to worry about something as trivial as this, then your life must be pretty damn good.

Whining about semantics is pointless.

QFT. AT is actually the worst place to ask anything since everyone here is a minority in some sense ($400K jobs, mansions, Ferraris and truenos )

This pisses me off too. They are taking Christ away more and more from Christmas. I don't mind the whole santa thing as it's something fun for the kids, but PLEASE teach the kids the true meaning, and that santa is just an "extra".

People writing Xmax piss me off too. now apparently in greek X means Christ. But that's not what comes to most people's mind when they see Xmas.

The only way we can fight that is stay strong and always point out the true meaning, and spell it correctly at all times. Unfortunatly in some settings it's illegal. Religious prosecution ftl.

What's the true meaning? It's not even Christ's birthday. it's just some pagan holiday that christians decided to add a whole new spin to. Advertisers say the Holidays because there are plenty of nonchristians who celebrate the holidays and practice gift giving.

The true meaning of Christmas has NOTHING to do with Christ. That's why we laugh at you bible thumpers, you don't even comprehend your own fairy tales.

The last time I checked Christmas was, to Christians, about the birth of Jesus (yes, I know it's probably not really the day he was born), since he is somewhat important to those who believe in him and what he did for us. Everything else comes from the secular aspect of Christmas, which is all well and good, but that stuff shouldn't be the central aspect of Christmas to somebody who believes in Christ. If you don't believe in the importance of Jesus, that's fine, go ahead and celebrate the secular side of Christmas, give gifts, spend time with your family and friends, that's what it means to you.

As far as the whole Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays thing, as a Christian I'm not so sure the prevalence of "Happy Holidays" is such a bad thing. Let Christians focus on Christmas and what it means to them, I don't see how less association with the secular and commercial aspects of the holiday hurts Christians.

Christ was real, get over it. He may not have been the son of god, performed miracles, or anything like that, but he was a person that did exist.

He's a janitor at work, too!

Yes, by all means, teach your children the meaning of Christmas as you believe it. It's a free country, you can do that.

Now, where in America is it illegal to spell out "Christmas"? Be specific please.

Last I heard it's illegal to use Christmas in public setting. Manufacturers are not even allowed to sell "Christmas trees" anymore, they have to label them Holiday tree. Not sure if it's all of US or parts of it, I'm not even sure if it's hit Canada yet (would not surprise me - it's just as bad here). They also can't use the word Christmas anywhere in their store.

Personally I'd do it anyway. Just need to gun proof and fireproof the whole thing...

As a little kid in the 70s, I understood saying "Happy Holidays!" was shorter and quicker than "Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!". I never was confused by this.

Companies understood not only was it easier to make signs bearing this greeting, it was also a friendly nod to other religions.

Somehow, wackos decided that liberal PC subterfuge was behind this move.

In reality, it was actually cost savings on printing, politeness, basic marketing strategy, and a friendly encompassing of other religious and secular holidays of the season.

It's not surprising that politeness would cause Bill O'Rielly to lose his cool, and allow power hungry loudmouths to appear to be victims. The less intelligent of us would march just as loudly right behind them. The less informed would think there was an actual attack on their faith.

I'm sorry if it appears that your choice of religion appears to be losing to secularism. Let me fill you in. That's ok. Nobody's trying to stop you from saying Merry Christmas. Understand you no longer have a boot on the neck of America. Yes, that appears to be a shift of power. Fortunately, for the mass of America, it's a shift toward balance.

We aren't going to say EXACTLY what you want at all times. Enjoy your freedom. Let us enjoy ours. We're actually INCLUDING you. It's not the place of marketing firms and corporations to educate your kids in theism. That's YOUR job.

Happy Holidays is not so bad, but it's when stuff like Christmas tree gets replaced. Not only is it removing Christ, but it sounds weird. "We're putting up the Holiday tree" sounds weird as opposed to "We're putting up the Christmas tree". Though the #1 piss off is people who say xmas. That would be like people using IM language in a business setting. Stop being so lazy and spell out the whole thing.

Wow! Where is that? As an agnostic AMERICAN, I will still help you fight for your right to privately pray as you like! Freedom for ALL!

Edit: Reading comp FTL! I didn't notice you said you were in Canada! Wups!

What you've heard is entirely incorrect. You can use Christmas in public settings. Businesses can put up creche displays if so inclined. Christmas trees can be called Christmas trees. Only when government funds or government owned spaces are being utilized are there any limits on expression and these limits are fairly liberal. The limits are designed to prevent government resources from being used to promote one religion or sect. That's pretty much it. For example, if a private group wants to put a creche on the court house lawn that's fine as long as other groups are allowed to place their symbols on the court house lawn in a similar fashion at a time appropriate to their beliefs. A pagan group may want to place a May Pole on the lawn for May Day. As long as the government is not discriminating on a religious basis, all is well. For example, the government could say no private groups can put up displays on the lawn. All is well as all are treated impartially. Or the government could say yes, every group that wants to can put up their displays for two weeks. Again, impartial. However, if the government says Theoastrorians can put up their display for two weeks but the Christians only get a day that would be discriminating based on religion and would be unconstitutional.

I don't get why you would be upset. It's not as if people are forced to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". It's just a marketing ploy. Happy Holidays talks to a larger audience than Merry Christmas, and also for a longer time.

The whole "OH NOES CHRISTIANS ARE UNDER ATTACK!!!!" attitude is retarded as well. Christians make up the overwhelming majority in this country, and it shows. No way are Christians under attack. Christian phrases are all over America, both private and public. So those Christians complaining need to shut the fuck up and realize that Christians have it much better off than any other religious affiliation in America.
