I used to love gmail but with them reading my mail to spam my inbox I want to go elsewhere. Suggestions?

Odd, they never put spam in my main tab, and I just ignore the social and promotions tabs.

I've been using gmail since it came out, I've never had a problem.

I guess I just have uninteresting email.

I have several accounts, and no real issues with any aside from Yahoo, but that's expected, as it's my spam trap. I assume you want something that might not get shut down. Yandex is huge, and they're Russian, so the USA won't be poking around their servers. It's free. There's several decent paid services, but I question how much it matters. I've become disenchanted with email in general.

Winny...you're doing it wrong.

But try outlook.com It will give you something web based and secure to compare gmail to.

Spam gets filtered by GMail nicely. Pops into a couple of tabs Andy never really know about it.

I agree. And just ignoring the other tabs doesn't solve the problem. I'm using it on my ipad mainly and it says I've got new mail regardless of the tab it falls under. If I could turn that off, no big deal. Since I can't I'm being notified of all the new spam google sends me.

I switched to Outlook a couple months ago for my main account. Also have my own mail server set up as well. Gmail I only use now for secondary accounts, though my main account was with them since early days of beta. I had over 70,000 emails and about 18,000 messages in Spam at one point. I deleted that account (after backing it up locally first, of course).

Even with search, filters, folders, labels, etc it just got to be too much. I also don't like the new features and views Google has been adding - Gmail was essentially perfect when it launched, they didn't need to tinker with the interface at all (some of the Labs features were useful, though, like being able to see who is on mobile or desktop in chat/contacts list).

Outlook is pretty good. Not too cluttered, spam filter seems decent but not quite as good as Google's (some false positives here and there).

Don't forget to turn on two-factor authentication. I have Authenticator on my One generating the codes for my Outlook and Gmail accounts. Just a little more trouble for what is essential security, even if you have a long, strong password.

I've gotten zero spam in my inbox. Turn off the tabs if it bothers you that much.

I use mail clients. I never see spam on my real accounts unless I open the spam folder.

this.

I use IMAP clients to view Gmail. The main reason for me to stick with Gmail is that their IMAP servers are really reliable. Microsoft won't let me do that without using outlook connector or live mail, so it is lock in.

I never get spam based on my emails. Targeted advertising, on the other hand....

They get rerouted to my primary then.

Did you "opt-out"? I've never turned the tabs on, and I've never gotten a spam email to my inbox (I never look at the spam folder) unless it's my own fault for signing up for something.

Gmail > settings > General > Just above the signature box "Importance signals for ads" click on "here" to change preferences and at the bottom you can choose to opt out.

if that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you. I regularly use 6 different Gmail accounts and I've never gotten a spam email in my inbox from google but also do not have the tabs turned on.

I think is problem is accidentally opting in to G+, which would probably subject him to tons of spam.

I think OP is referring to Gmail-SPONSORED spams coming to your inbox as legit emails:

I read about this couple days ago and what do you know, I got the exact thing the next day.

There's an option to opt-out, which I did. But Gmail knows your casual base (90%+) won't know to click 4 times in the settings.

Haven't seen that. Even if it's opt-out, that's garbage and I would switch providers entirely if that started appearing in my inbox. Text ads off to the side I don't mind so much.

Even more reason for me to stick with my own domain and server. I'm trusting free cloud services like storage or even webmail less and less these days. You never know when these companies will make things worse or kill off something entirely. We aren't entitled to anything, and they know it.

ditto for the two gmail accounts I use. Any server gets spammed-I remember reading an article that something like 96% of ALL email sent worldwide is spam, your server (no matter how bad) filters out all but a tiny percentage of it automatically.

Gmail does do targeting ads on the side but I never look there.
