my first option is delete
you have thousands of photos that maybe looked at once. OR have a few photos that you'll look at thousands of time.

After accumulating over 1600 photos, I finally set a workflow that goes: shoot, come home, import card into LR, give the deserving candidates 4 or 5 stars; the rest are deleted. Card goes back into the camera and is formatted. No regrets, and I usually am lucky to get 3 or 4 printable candidates out of as many as 200 shots. Ya just gotta be brutal, and no looking back. Were I shooting stock or for clients, it would be a different story.

Thank you everyone for the advice. It also helps to hear that 179GB is probably small potatoes compared to the mountain of photos other people have.

Considering how bloody check disk storage is and the readily available RAID mirror (or manual redundancy), why should a TB of work be of storage concerns?

As for boiling down the number of images to something more manageable in image handling, I do a quick look over immediately following a dump from the flash cards and create a sub-folder CHOICE to use as the working best images on a dump.

What I find more difficult in management, though, is subject matter. So, the need to multi-tag is always a must. This is easy if done in the beginning, but once you've accumulated tens of thousands of images the chore is the only reality.

That's not a lot. I have terabytes of photos. You don't need to delete any. Hard drive space is cheap!

Just get Lightroom and use that to sort. You have several options.

You can take each day's photos, or each folder, or whatever, and put it in a collection set. Then delete from that set. The file won't be deleted, only the reference in Lightroom.

Or you can rate them with stars or colors. For example go through and rate the pictures you want with 3 stars, and the really good ones can get 4 or 5 stars.
