These forums will be studied by historians thousands of years from now as a look back on a time of primitive ancient technology.

Do I count as an old timer?
I am old af.

I was early 30s when I joined here. I'll be 56 this year.

I think I joined right around the time the first 1 ghz Intel pentium came out.

Oh, and I was running Voodoo 2s in SLI and ballin with a 20 inch triniton monitor.

Anand is member 200. I registered not long after he did on Oct. 9th.

Last logged on March 9th 2015. That was the day when he drank enough of the Apple Kool-Aid to fully abandon the site he created. A sad sad tale.

I wonder what this place looked like in the early 2000s?

Was it like the wild west? Could you post whatever you wanted (within reason) without any issues?
I still do a college radio show (in recent years Wednesdays, 3-6PM Pacific Time, on KALX, Berkeley, UC Berkeley radio, 90.7FM and streaming from www.kalx.berkeley.edu), been pretty regular since 1980. Back then you could play damn near anything on the air, say damn near anything. I played songs like "Let's Fuck" by D.O.A., "Fuck Me Dead" by The Forgotten Rebels, "I Think You're Shit" by The Fuckups. All great songs, but we never play stuff like that anymore. We used to play them unedited, no problem. Nowadays we'd be kicked off the air by our station management. The FCC could fine us thousands of $$$. The USA has gotten a lot more restrictive with the media. I think the push for freedom from the fervor of the 60's leading into and through the 70's got burned away. I suppose you could blame Reagan for a lot of that, I do.

We play stuff, but we bleep out the "O's" or take the source out of Program for the instant that the offending word occurs. It's almost comical. There's always a chance you play something with a bad word you didn't know about, especially if you play older recordings from before we had to mark up the sleeves with warnings about objectionable verbiage.

I remember the 00s... you press F5, the whole page would be new threads every few minutes.

I went to an ATOT meetup in Boston two decades ago. I also became IRL friends with few buddies here (only I still visit). Man, we're all working dads now.

I remember my headspace when I was in college. I was in denial that ATOTers were Not introverted nerds. Duh of course we were.... flaming each other and being the fearsome keyboard warriors on a Saturday night.

I think I'm still in denial that I'm an introverted nerd. My job (proj mgmt), my public speaking skills, and etc all point to extroversion. But I've learned that introverts acting like an extrovert is very common (e.g. artists/comics/musicians crushing it on stage, scared of fan interaction in the backstage).

It's important to remember that being introverted doesn't mean that you don't like interacting with other humans, but rather that it's draining and often has an associated necessity of recovery time. Whereas for an extrovert, they're energized by the interactions.

i've always been pretty good at roleplaying an extrovert at work

but then when i clock out, i'm mentally drained and don't feel like going anywhere or talking to anyone
