I wonder what this place looked like in the early 2000s?

Was it like the wild west? Could you post whatever you wanted (within reason) without any issues?
That's when we used Fusetalk for the forums.

No, you couldn't post whatever you wanted to. There were rules then just like now.

The question back then wasn't IF there were rules for posting, it's WHAT those rules actually were! Seemed like enforcement had a lot to do with wind-direction and EGO more than anything else.

Sadly the result of the supposed "fix" (ie: change of culture) was the loss of of many of our original members for NO good reason and a MAJOR hit to our internet "significance".

OT in particular has NEVER recovered.

Things were different back then but the rules were basically the same as now.

Also, I was on the forums before Fusetalk and they were very primitive. But that is when AT was very young. I actually joined in 1998.

First time I visited AT I was looking to decide if it was worth springing for some "exotic" 133 mhz SDRAM over 100 mhz and fortunately I stumbled on Anand's review. (it wasn't worth the upgrade lol)

I started out "posting" in the comments section of the main website (lol) and signed up for the forums shortly afterwards but then I didn't post much for a while and my original account got borked. (or I spaced the password and fvcked it up myself!)

before the great rift...i mean forum split...Off Topic was THE place. There were so many different YAXT thread (yet another ____ thread). I remember mashing F5 to keep up with all the posts. FS/FT also had quite a lot of traffic.

from what i remember, it seemed there were many more people getting their accounts banned back then

but maybe that's only because there were many more people on ATOT

in society in general, there were a few things that people commonly said back then which are frowned upon now
Moderators had a haughty perspective about themselves. A faux sense of power that's come crashing down to reality as traditional forums die out. Who even want's to be a forum moderator anymore? The task is mostly taken up by the old/retired who cling to memories of the glory days.

I’m still here. Been here since 97 but lost my account when they banned AOL users.
