Im getting kind of hot for the 8700K. Convince me I don't need it.

Yeah so all I do is game on this rig. I'm limited to 100hz refresh rate so I think my 6800K@4.2ghz probably has that covered pretty well at 3440x1440 and probably the next GPU upgrade should be covered by that as well. BUT, I have that little flame inside me that burns for the 8700K, or possibly the 8 core version coming next which should be even more unnecessary for my needs.
Can you save me money here? Tell me I don't need this thing. Would this help gaming performance vs the 6800K when limited to only 100hz?

You don't need a new CPU, but if you can't resist the itch, you should at least wait until Intel launches their next CPUs / Z390 chipset motherboards. In my opinion, a 8700k doesn't make a lot of since, along with the one-off LGA1151 Z370 boards unless you really need it now. With your current CPU, you definitely are not in the "really need it now" category.

That bit of information should help you delay the decision until later this year when that comes out.

What you have will leave you GPU bound for a few years yet. Save your money, or do something nice for your SO.

I would wait for Intel's 8c/16t CPU myself, otherwise you will not see enough improvement to be worthwhile to bother with upgrading.

Unless you are running a 1080Ti, I wouldn't bother, and even then the difference would be marginal at 1440P.

Save your pennies for your next GPU upgrade.

Since the OP current system should last him at least a few more years, I would simply save up money to build a completely new rig by the time he will see a major benefit in doing so.

that was not the case with CPU in last five years, ryzen changed the CPU world and AMD is pushing hard.

OP you do not need to upgrade. Save your moneys for some other desires that you have.
Of course it was the case in the last 5 years. It's always been that way. It has never changed, imo.
CPUs were only a small part of the game. This has little to do with AMD or Intel. If it wasn't a CPU you had to wait for, it was a video card, or a feature.
8 times out of 10 the CPU or card or feature was underwhelming when it finally arrived, and the waiting really wasn't worth it.

Our builds are similar, and I personally find myself GPU bound in most everything I've done outside of things like Blender or Handbrake.
This. If the OP is doing major usage of such programs like Blender and Handbrake , then it might be worthwhile to upgrade to the 8700K or even a higher end CPU.

I miss the 90's and early 2000's. My friend had a Pentium 150, and compared to my dad's DX2 is was INSANE. I mean it was absolutely INSANE!! I miss the experience of watching your games lag like absolute crap and then installing that new CPU upgrade and the game suddenly comes to life. Just like going from a slide show to a movie. Sigh...those days are gone. Even going from something like an i7 930 to an 8700K wouldn't give you that kind of upgrade experience. Its because with those old school upgrades we used to go from unplayable to playing great. Now we go from something like 80fps to 200fps.
My last big upgrade was from a dual core E8400 to a 2600K. That was the last insane upgrade I'll probably ever experience, and even then the same games were still playable on the E8400. It just had bad mins. I'll wait to see what Intel does with their 8 core offerings later on this year or next. Or maybe not.

Marginal gains at best. I was okay with that since I'm a hardware nut and I'll upgrade to the latest and greatest for fun.

Unfortunately, even at 4.7GHz all-core OC'd it will still drop frames streaming via OBS in games like Far Cry 5 (I play 4K native --> stream at 1080p). Even at the ultrafast preset.

So until there's an 8-core version of it, a dedicated streaming box with capture card is still necessary if you want the best performance gaming + best quality streaming. Of course even the 8-core may not be enough... we will see.

Ofcource you can upgrade. Its not about need.
I just upgraded from a 1700 to a 8700k and still get 60fps on my 4k screen in bf1. Same. If anything it feels a bit slower for office use. Lol.
I need a 144 4k ips or oled. So hope to get some use here if i can get the screen.
We both know its all about bf. And yeaa i think perhaps you can even provoke a 8700k at 4.9 under 100fps in some extreme corner cases. I can.
But aside from that ...yeaa you need a 8 core cpu. So Its either next 8c kabylake after summer or so or zen 2 in a year. Same result i guess so go for the kabylake 8c on a 390 board. To keep that fire alive. Thats what matters.

That's a fair point, and yes, its basically all about BF. If the next game is good and I really like it, then there will be no stopping me. It will have to be an 8 core Kaby or Ice lake or whatever it ends up being. The CPU lid will need to get ripped off and that filthy TIM paste washed away like the sin against the community that it is. It won't feel right without a new case and lots of glass. Maybe even glass water tubing as well. I've thought about going glass next time. Cleaner, clearer, more L33T. This, along with an 1180Ti would in fact be necessary for a proper next gen BF game. If that game sucks, then all hope is lost. Absolutely shattered is what I will be.

Yeaa you are right. Ofc. Never thought about the rgb bling and glass whatnot in that way. Sure. We need TIM washed away and glass bling and water.

Bf is going ww2. I guess thats okey. Would have preferred something more older and dirty than even ww1. Like american civil war. Kill your brother with a showel narrative.
If bf2 ends up bad i will return to tf2 and play pyro. On a laptop.

My last cpu upgrade was from an E8600 to a 3570K. I upgraded because of mechwarrior online, which ran pretty badly on a dual core . It was way better with the quad core cpu even with the old 480GTX I was using at the time.

You do need it. In fact, you need two. Turn one of them into a shrine and leave offerings to it every day. Old ram, old cpus, the blood of your firstborn...the usual stuff.
