This is really starting to tick me off...
I recently completed a project in ASP.NET here at work that was going to be outsourced to a 3rd party company. My manager told me that it was absolutely important and it needed to be done in 3 weeks and we need to get it live as soon as possible. I told him that it was going to be real hard especially with my fulltime college schedule but he said its either that or he continues to pay $80000 a year to a 3rd party company. So I did the whole thing in 3 weeks... I worked real hard, sometimes even skipping lunch to get the job done and even skipping college classes.
Well, I get it done and a couple of users tested it out and they liked it and what do you know, the project is not so urgent any more (been about a month since I've completed it).... heck, my manager hasn't even put in a request to the ISP for an IP for the server.
This isn't the first time something like this has happend... and its starting to really get on my nerves. I killed myself doing this project, if it wasn't so urgent WTF did he say so.
Every single project that I've done was done within a specified time and I've NEVER once slacked off.
I hate it when he does this... I went through hell through the 3 weeks of the project and then I found out it wasn't so urgent.

man, when I get a new job, I'm gonna cuss the dude out.

Get used to it.

I've had the same thing happen to me several times, in several different jobs.

I know how you feel.

boss: "it needs to do this, and this, and this, and we need it on this date... etc"

1 month later:

me: "Ok boss, it's done"
boss: "We're just going to use some MS product that wasn't designed for this task to do a half-assed job of it instead, because that's what I was doing while you were working on the software that does it correctly, and I kind of got used to it."

Just keep telling yourself it's work experience that will help you get your first real job.

I'd never put up with treatment like that myself, but I have experience, skill, and money in the bank so losing my job holds no fear for me. Eihter treat me like a professional, or fire me and hire yourself a slave.

You have to realize from a management's perspective, they are trying to cover their @$$. I don't mean that in a bad way... they have to make sure deadlines can be met so they pad it. It's never a guarantee ANYTHING will go-live. Customers are unpredictable... they can be because it's their money.

That doesn't mean I don't feel your pain.

i know how you feel, happened to me a few times already. i guess that's the way it works sometimes...

however, set your priorities straight, eat lunch and make sure you pass those classes. so even if the project got canned, at least you're not starving and you're on your way to your degree/diploma...

Just an update on my rant:

my boss came over to me today and he told me that a project that needed to be done on June 1 needs to be done today!!!! Now that just got me boiling. To top things off, my stupid @Rs3 team member has been on the phone for like 4 hours talking with his friends and spent all morning fixing someone's computer in my department (although we have a help desk that does exactly this!!!!).. man, I swear, I'm ready to blow up right now....
and I haven't even had my lunch yet!

LIF3 IS T3H SUX0RZ!

Priorities change according to business needs.

What the boss wants, the boss gets. He is the one signing your paycheck.

Get used to the hurry up and wait syndrome.

Many projects never et deployed for one reason or another. At least they were funded.

Yep.
Not uncommon at all.
I've worked crazy hours to get projects done by a certain date only to find out that because of issues in other departments, launch date is delayed a month.
But the important thing is that me or my team was NOT the bottleneck. It is much better to get something completed and have to wait for others than to have others finished and waiting for you.

I've also had projects where once it is completed, people change their minds about what they want so half the functionality of the app I built gets thrown away.

But the bottom line is that you got your work done and that is what matters. Yes it is frustrating, but there are many factors outside your control that can cause delays or cancellations of projects. All you can do is make sure that your work is done when it is supposed to be done.

I would agree with you guys if the project priority changed because of changing business needs, heck, I wouldn't even say anything.
The projects in question were in-house software to be used by in-house employees and there was never any change in the business need for the in-house employees.

I found out what happend though. For the project in my OP, there was never any need to have it done immediately. The project was only going to be deployed after a phase-out scheme was developed which needed to be co-ordinated with third parties. The phase-out scheme hadn't even been started by management at the time of telling me about the project.
The second project that the boss told me that needs to be done in a hurry was because of poor planning. Apparently upper-management had a change in plans that the boss forgot to tell me about until yesterday (learnt this from another manager).

AFAIK, my boss is messing with me and I'm really starting to get depressed
Meanwhile, my co-worker who was busy reading dilbert cartoons, writing emails, and making phone calls just started with the project...

...I'm seriously thinking about changing jobs.

I'm just so worked up right now, I needed to blow off steam somewhere and this board seems to help.
