I've found myself using Windows more and more lately. I used to not have it installed, but now I find that I use it 99% of the time.

Anyone else losing interest? I'm thinking about installing FreeBSD.

Yeah, desktop.

I've been using it since 1997 and I'm just getting, well, tired of it. It's progressed a long way since then, but it's not where it should be, whatever the reason.

If you didn't like Linux for desktop use, there's no way you're going to like FreeBSD any better. Desktop-wise, the BSD's usually just port stuff over that was developed on Linux in the first place. If you just want to play around with a new OS infrastructure, that's cool, but don't expect the desktop feel to be any different. Surprising that you don't like the Linux desktop after using it for so long, because it really is so much better now than even 2 years ago, much less 5. But, hey, to each his own...

I've found it better and worse in various areas of work. When I'm web surfing and doing email and the like I use Windows mostly, but occasionally I'll use Linux. Gaming I use Windows. Office work I use Windows as well. For programming I use Linux, which means anything I use a program of my own for I do in Linux (well, technically not anything, as I got ahold of a student copy of C++ Builder 5 for $12. It's pretty cool and I'm actually doing some Windows programming now. I still code mostly in Unix though). I also use Linux exclusively for my server stuff (I run an FTP server, a web server for webmail access, a Samba server, and a BnetD server). I use the two OS's on seperate systems though. I've got a crossover cable between them for 100mbps networking so they've kinda got a symbiotic thing going on (and with my KVM switch I can change between Linux and Windows desktops with the press of a button. makes using both of them a lot less troublesome).

PS: One thing that I definately LOVE about Linux is the whole remote X11 thing. All the Windows labs at the college I attend have X-Win32 installed (and it's site liscensed so I can get it for free in my room) because of the large number of Solaris machines used in the Computer Science department (and the Solaris machines are using X inheritly). Using this X server I can pull up any application from my Linux box on the lab machine remotely. Very cool for boring labs that don't have any little games installed .

Yeah, Linux has it's cool points, don't get me wrong. I don't dislike Linux, I'm just getting bored with it.

It still seems immature.

If your bored of Linux you are nothing going to like BSD at all my friend. Frankly windows began to bore me because of the lack of things you could do with it when you wanted to tweak it. You know about the only thing I miss about windows was the games I could get for it, but WineX and D2-Lod have cured that problem for me for the meanwhile. Well untill I get my hands on NWN. Everythings else I did on windows I can pretty much do on Linux and am not even close to bored with it. Ihaven't booted into w2k in a veeeeeeeery long time now.

i agree. i've been windows free for quite some time now, and i've only been using linux since last fall! :Q

for certain things like gaming, you don't have a whole lot of choice (yes, wine/wineX, but still, for pure gamers, they dont care and dont want to deal with linux), but for my needs, linux is great. i hardly use email, so i just use yahoo webmail (no need for a client or anything), web browsers IMO are better under linux than windows, mp3 players are a dime a dozen, xine is great for movies, as is mplayer, irc clients are in the same boat as browsers, and other than that most of the stuff i do has to do with linux/unix related stuff, learning, exploring, etc. (i.e. apache, php, ssh(d), etc)

anyways, i cant blame you for going back to windows. while i prefer linux, i definitely can say that it is not for everyone. (neither is windows, or anything for that matter)

I have both W2K and Linux installed. And over time, I have started to use Linux more and more. Now-a-days, only time I use Windows is when I play games. For everything else, it's Linux only.

I RARELY use windows nowdays... I used to use Windows for gaming... but now that I have a Gforce3, games are great in Linux too..

Heck, I went to a 600 person lan gaming party over the holiday weekend, and I only booted up in Linux to try out Jedi Knight...

I played in several tournaments using just Linux:

- Return to Castle Wolfenstien
- UT/Strike Force
- UT/CTF
- UT/Airflight UT (man that mod rocks)
- Q3/urban terror
- HL/DOD

Linux will run just about every UT, Quake 3 game/mod there is... and it plays all Half Life +Mods great....

If your a FPS kinda person, Linux provides plenty of gaming goodness to keep you happy..

i use linux at home, most windoze at work. Ill never go backwards to windoze at home bec im tired of fixing its crashes, instabilities, AND VIRUSES. linux is more crashproof
and most virsuses and worms are written for windoze because theres more targets.

I can see where you are coming from Chaotic42. I find myself drifting further and further away from computers in general. I have been using FreeBSD since the end of last year, and like it, but computers just aren't doing it for me anymore. The simple things I know how to do are getting old, and the new things I want to learn are complex, and I have no time for them (because of school). I often times find myself starting projects and never finishing them. I hope this is just a phase...

TheOmegaCode your not the only one.

Computers used to be my life, but here lately Ive lost interested in them. The only thing I do anymore is post on Anandtech and a couple other boards and check my mail. Thats it.

Im even thinking about changing my career (which would mean almost starting over in school), but I have no ideal what else I would want to do with my life.

You can download the Linux native UT binaries here, you just need to run the install program and have the retail Windows CD... its sort of like this... if you own the Windows version, the Linux version is free...

ftp://ftp.lokigames.com/pub/patches/ut/

Grab the ut-install-436.run file , make it executable, put your windows UT CD 1 in the cdrom drive, and run the program.. a nice little gui installer will then run for you..

On the contrary ... I am finding it more & more painful on the rare occasions that I have to do anything non-trivial in Windows.

I've been getting farther from computers too. I just upgraded because I got a promotion. I stumbled into a new career, which I'll stick with as long as things work out. I never thought I'd work in radio, it's foreign and I've got a lot of learning to do. Just started my new position 3 weeks ago. I was a board op.

I'm drifting away from computers too. My only other passion is DJing, but I'm not really a DJ (yet).
