Actually, Chris McCandless had it much more together than Cheez. Very few people could have done what Chris did. He was an off the grid adventurer with his own motivations. I read the book before seeing the movie. Also of interest here is Wild, again, I read the book before seeing the movie. Wild was one woman's desperate move to rescue herself, but she too was a self motivated adventurer, something way different from Cheez's fantasy. Much more to the point would be 2018's Leave No Trace, about a guy (and his daughter) who live off the grid, camping in a park.
