An FYI and request for info. I'm accepting a counter-offer on a house (or did accept and it should have be submitted on Saturday) so barring inspection I should be a home owner soon enough.

Also, this house included an above ground pool. This isn't something I was looking for in a house but since it's there I might as well enjoy it. Any other pool owners here? I'm hopefully going to be getting some maintence info from the owners themselves, but some extra info here wouldn't hurt. Just looking for things like what kind of chemicals do I need, how much, how often, where do you get yours, etc.

my parents worst mistake was getting a pool when we were younger. it was fun as kids, having parties, etc. a HUGE pita when shit breaks/goes wrong. freezing pipes, etc.

good luck, however!

When I was growing up we had an above ground pool for 15 years. It really wasn't a big hassle, but it does require some regular maintenance. You can get test kits at places like Walmart that determine how much of each kind of chemical you need to add.

The biggest hassle is setting the pool up for the summer and getting it ready for winter in the fall.

I would think above-ground pools* reduce resale value... kind of a WT thing.

* unless built into a deck or similar.

Above ground, not the same as in ground. All i can think of is the little dolphin wading pools.

We need pictures to determine if it's a nice one or not.

Although being winter it might be hard to judge it.

Locate a local pool store and pump them for information.

Get supplies from them; it may cost a few $$ more than a box store; but this way you are supporting the locals and also repaying them for the info you will need.

Read everything. I love my pool, bought a house with an inground. Overall I spend 10 minutes every few nights and maybe and hour to do a vacuum on the weekend.

We love it and use the hell out of it.

DO NOT GO TO A POOL STORE FOR ADVICE!!!!! All they will do is sell you expensive chemicals that will eventually screw up your water, making you come in for...you guessed it...more magic chemicals.

Bleach, Baking soda and Borax is all you need for a pool. They will cost you 10-15 bucks a month at most.

I had a little pool once. It was the worst thing ever. Get rid of the pool, and make friends with someone who has one. You can buy me a beer later.

A good friend of mine in SoCal has a pool & the first 9 months were a total PITA for him. He did a ton of research online & asked folks for help to no avail. I believe it was the 3rd pool guy he hired that actually got things moving in the right direction. I know pool guys can be expensive, but it's probably worth it in the long run.

If you have a Leslie's Pool Supplies where you live, I believe you can take them a sample of your pool water to determine which chemicals you need. I've heard good things around here about them.

Chlorine to control the bacteria - pool store has it cheaper than buying bleach bottles.
to much at a time and you shut down the pool for a day or two.

Stabilizers.

There are good and bad pool stores; ask the neighborhood.

An automatic vacuum will save the expensive 90+ minutes a week.

/Had inground pool outside Everglades for 10 years.

Pools are great... as long as they aren't mine.

My neighbor has a pool, in ground (nobody has above ground pools in CA), and they use it during the summer quite a bit.

Congrats on the home purchase though Brandon.

They are undesirable to most, myself included, but they shouldn't reduce value. Reason being is scrap metal. The house we bought had an above ground pool. I promptly dismantled it and hauled it to a scrap yard and got $1500 for it.

There are some municipalities/states where you are required to fence in your pool as well as carry additional insurance. If some kid manages to find his way into your pool and drown is kinda why I would shy away from a house with a pool.

I can't even imagine being in South Florida and not having a pool.

Actually went in yesterday for the first time this year. Still a little chilly at 82 degrees, but the kids had a lot of fun. Another week or two of hot weather and hopefully the solar panels can warm it up to the point I don't need to cannonball in to enter.

"Permanent" above ground pools today have side walls that typically exceed the height requirement for a "barrier", thus no fence is needed. Only a locking gate across the ladder or steps is needed.

Additional insurance is not usually required for above ground pools since it is not a capital improvement. An inground will require more insurance, particularly if you add a diving board.
