You've got to do some planning, especially out west where food & water stops can be few & far between. Up to Colorado, I'd generally look about a day ahead. From there on, to the pacific, especially in Montana, Wyoming & Idaho, i'd have at least a rough idea where I expected to be 3 or 4 days out. There's one stretch in Wyoming ... Rawlins to Lander I believe, that is about 140 any way you slice it. Although you could split that if you carried enough food and knocked on some doors for water (or filtered it). It's no big deal though ... if you've got good maps, it's a few minutes a day.
