Over the last 5 months, I've given up soda, milk(s), juice, coffee, and tea. I drink water, lots of it.

Same here. I have pretty much completely stopped drinking soda which I have been addicted to since I was a small child. I have to thank Mio and the Great Value water flavors that you can buy in any grocery store or Wal Mart, and I actually prefer the GV which is sold in Wal Mart. I replaced my soda habit with these items and drink 4-6 huge cups of water a day now while only drinking soda when I go out to eat.

I never got headaches or any other issues when I quit, probably thanks to the huge amounts of water I was drinking, but I have to say I feel significantly better and have lost about 10-20 pounds since doing this. All I drink now is water and some milk when I feel like something different.

And please don't start with the you're still an addict crap, this isn't heroin and I'm not going to overdose and die by getting a soda when I go out.

Thanks.

Sucks for you that you drink soda and were offended by my comment.
Too bad you're too fucking stupid to get it.

Sounds like I hit a nerve. Not really sure where you got that I was offended. You just have a retarded opinion. Much like O'Reilly.

P.S. I pretty much drink only water.

At least he isn't part of the demographic that calls all soda (pop) "COKE"

That graphic is incredibly misleading. By lumping the uninhabited wastelands in with their surrounding demographics just because there might be one or two people living there who might call it what their DISTANT neighbors also might, they make it appear the the majority say "pop." They do not. Now, it also fails to account that the vast majority who say that they say "soda" any place where a Northerner might say "pop" actually say "drink," which means that they actually don't use a generic name for soft drinks anywhere where a Northerner might. "Drink" works just fine without specifying soda, pop, or soft drink. For example, almost all drinks available at a fast food place are soft drinks, so why specify? (especially if they additionally happen to offer unsweetened tea or something)

accompanied by the blood sugar spike too, i assume?
Your point?
Tomatoes have 5 times what an orange has.
The levels of Methanol produced are completely safe. Your body gets rid of it faster than it produces it and produces far less from reasonable amounts of Aspartame than with natural fruits that you must agree are healthy and safe. Sugar has nothing to do with that process.

One tomato equals 150+ times more Methanol than a typical diet soda.

You probably won't miss it after a while. If you go back and take a drink after not drinking it for a while, it tastes like sugary chemicals.

I can't drink Coke, unless it's from a fountain. From a bottle or can, it tastes like watery dirt, now that I don't drink it regularly.

I used to love Coke.

To those who say "zomg pop bad for you don't drink it at all!" then what do you drink other than water? Don't say water. Everyone has a leisure drink of some sort, whether it's alcohol, juice, coffee etc... Most drinks are by nature, bad for us. In fact most foods are, unless you go fully vegan. Even then. I say, eat drink and be merry. Enjoy life, stop worrying about the sugar levels and caffeine levels and all that. We're all going to die at some point no matter how health addict we get.

Just don't go overboard and eat 20 pieces of cake per day and 40 pops. Those are the people that need to worry.

Good luck, and it's a good goal. I'm sure a lot of people here support you. I used to drink around 6 cans a day, and sometimes got up to 2 2-liter bottles a day while working on CS projects. I decided to quit one day and felt a lot better. I gradually started drinking it again. Over the past 10 years I've quit and restarted a few times but I never got up to 6+ cans a day after that first time I quit. It's more like 1-2 cans a day when I decide to start back up.

I also think it fucks up my stomach pretty bad when I drink it now. I usually start back up when I'm stressed about work, and there's a big deadline to meet. Maybe the days of coding while drinking tons o soda have some sort of comfort while coding. It doesn't feel the same as it did back then though. Just makes me feel gross.

Maybe i missed something, but why are you bringing up methanol if he mentioned blood sugar?

When I was a kid I loved soda b/c we never had any in the house. I still like an occasional root beer or cream soda, but I can't drink a whole can- makes my stomach upset. I like a bit of coke every now and then- just a couple of swigs does me. Of course, for our anniversary, my wife and I went to Atlanta b/c we had never really spent any time there. We visited the Coke Museum. Sampling all the different types of sodas they make around the world was alot of fun and interesting, too. I drank alot of soda that day

Aspartame is metabolized into methanol and subsequently formic acid, which is one of the arguments why "it's terrible for you." But as stated, the quantities are too small. It can be bad if your body can't handle the compound itself though.

Personally I hate diet soda and artificial sweeteners. Aspartame itself tastes too powdery. At least the big makers are moving to an aspartame/sucralose/AceK mix, but still not great. I'd rather see stevia adopted as a sugar replacement.

I'm curious, were you guys allowed soda as kids or is this something you picked up in high school/college?

I was allowed soda as a kid, though we don't keep it in the house all the time. My parents pushed milk a lot and usually wouldn't let me have soda unless I had milk before in the day. I top out on about two cans' worth of soda a day, but that's rare. I've mostly switched to the homemade Sodastream I mentioned before. I prefer sodas with natural sugar over corn syrup because fructose just isn't satisfying.
