Diet soda makes you fat...

http://theweek.com/article/index/216838/are-diet-sodas-making-you-fat

What's hilarious is people have convinced themselves the fake tasting shit tastes /better/ than real soda in the deluded belief they're keeping weight off, but they're getting fucked both ways. They're drinking shit water, AND gaining weight :^D

Plenty of folks that drink diet soda and lose weigh. My gf and myself being a few of them. Oh well, that one study was debunked.

It's kind of funny how defensive some people get in this thread. I decided to stop, some people encouraged me, and now it's turned into some war where people feel the need to defend their cola consumption. I don't care if you drink it, I never attacked people for doing so. Just wanted to stop drinking it myself.

And, btw, the people defending soda keep saying: you're gonna die at some point anyway. Duh. But as I said in my OP, I quit/cut back back to stop feeling like ass all the time. And it's working. Not because I thought it would make me invincible.

Wow..some of you guys are hardcore about this.

I drink 2 cans a night, tops. It's my desert. Seriously. When I'm done with dinner and usually killing time gaming at the end of the night, I allow myself a can of coke zero or two.

I only drink diet now. I LOVE Coke Zero. Diet Coke is ass. Diet Pepsi is good as well.

I almost ALWAYS drink water with meals, except with certain foods like Pizza or hamburgers, where I'll drink a Sprite (non-diet).

Except, it doesn't. Actually read the article you link, not just the headline. From your article:

How is that possible?
That is still unknown, but researchers speculate that the artificial sweeteners warp appetite, leaving diet soda drinkers hungry for unhealthy treats.

So essentially, according to that article, it's speculated that diet soda MAY trigger your appetite for more unhealthy foods, not the soda itself "making you fat"

And as was linked in this very thread, even that feeble hypothesis is anything but conclusive:

http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-sodas-and-weight-gain-not-so-fast

Turns out all the news stories and blog postings cite the same few studies: research in rats conducted by two investigators at Purdue University and two studies that followed soda drinkers over time.

Popkin, who heads the division of nutrition epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, says none of the studies makes a convincing case that no-calorie sodas contribute to weight gain.

...

“The bloggers of the world have latched on to the notion that diet sodas cause obesity, but the science just isn’t there to back it up,” Popkin says.

In an analysis published last year, Popkin and co-author Richard D. Mattes, PhD, MPH, RD, who is a nutrition professor at Purdue University but was not involved in the rat studies, reviewed the research examining the impact of artificial sweeteners on weight.

They found little support for the notion that no-calorie sweeteners stimulate appetite or contribute to obesity in some other way, but they say more research is needed to know for sure.

...
It may also be that people with very poor diets disproportionately drink diet sodas.

Popkin calls this the “Big Mac and Diet Coke” mentality.

“Especially in America, we have a lot of people who eat high-fat, high-sugar diets, but also drink diet sodas,” he says.

Seriously, read the body of science on the topic. At the most, all that can be said is that the sweetness of diet soda may increase the desire for less healthy (sugary, junk) foods. Even that is tenuous, at BEST.

When I first started working out of college I worked at a place that had free soda. Being a sugar fiend with a super high metabolism I probably was drinking 8 cans a day including sodas at home from fast food places. I wasn't really overweight at the time but saw guys at work who were 300+ (I was about 185 and 5'11) I guess from free food and soda.

Anyway I switched to diet and hated the taste but stuck with it. Didn't eat any more or less but I lost 10 pounds in the first couple months. You get used to the taste after a bit . In fact regular hfcs soda kind of tastes bad now that I'm not used to it

Eventually I'd like to give up soda but diet definitely won't make you fat. Food and sugar and carbs makes you fat and the studies are all bad correlations. People who drink fresh juice probably aren't as fat even though juice has tons of sugar. But people into organic juice tend to be more health conscious

Sounds like I hit a nerve. Not really sure where you got that I was offended. You just have a retarded opinion. Much like O'Reilly.

P.S. I pretty much drink only water.

And here you go again bringing up my username on this forum as if it means anything. How fucking pathetically stupid are you really?

you probably drink alcohol which is way worse for you, stupid

I can't be bothered quoting all your alcohol related posts, but you kept it up after several people told you to STFU about it. What's your major malfunction numbnutz?

That graphic is incredibly misleading. By lumping the uninhabited wastelands in with their surrounding demographics just because there might be one or two people living there who might call it what their DISTANT neighbors also might, they make it appear the the majority say "pop." They do not. Now, it also fails to account that the vast majority who say that they say "soda" any place where a Northerner might say "pop" actually say "drink," which means that they actually don't use a generic name for soft drinks anywhere where a Northerner might. "Drink" works just fine without specifying soda, pop, or soft drink. For example, almost all drinks available at a fast food place are soft drinks, so why specify? (especially if they additionally happen to offer unsweetened tea or something)

WTF irrational rant. Did you actually take the time to type that drivel and actually believe it had contained anything meaningful?

Maybe i missed something, but why are you bringing up methanol if he mentioned blood sugar?

The only thing I can imagine him saying that the blood sugar spike comes from is the orange. Tomatoes have far less sugar but 5x the "poisonous" methanol, which is why I referenced the orange in the first place.

The same can be said about the people who made the graphic. Why aren't you saying "ZOMG they actually bothered!" instead of pushing it on us?

My 9 yrs old daughter was the one that got me and the whole family off soda. I used to always have some stocked at home and one day while I was drinking a Coke she looked at the ingredients on the can and told me how she learned at school that HFCS is really bad for you so I shouldn't drink the stuff. I guess that triggered something in my mind and we all just decided to quit cold turkey and I haven't bought any home since then. Sure we still drink some every now when we go out on special occasions but don't have any at home and I've quit drinking them at work too - replaced with water, coffee, iced tea etc. We've cut out a lot of other products that has HFCS as well. It's all good. Now I hope they don't teach her about how bacon may be bad for you - that's where I draw the line.

You'll be back. What I do is just limit soda drinking to certain days. I watch all my NBC Thursday shows on Friday and that's when I drink a can. Saturday is also my movie night so I drink another can then. Max limit of two cans per week.
