MR. PRESIDENT, I'M HEADED TO MEXICO

Dear President Bush:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

3. All government forms need to be printed in English.

4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.

5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.

7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.

9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.

13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your V.P.

Aside, it's smart, and expresses rightful concerns I suppose. However you didn't touch on the jobs that you'd be willing to do for the Mexicans that they wouldn't want to. And you have to be at poverty level...

I'm not sure if you or any other critic of this issue realize that most of these people are finding work here for survival purposes. They don't randomly decide to take a vacation to the United States and happen to stay here. And while your satire may be amusing, it's clearly lacking the desparation exhibited by the immigrants.

(And try going overseas with a bunch of American tourists and seeing how obnoxious they are to waiters, etc. because they do not speak English.)

Well, as for my input, I have mixed feelings on the issue. I don't have anything against people wanting to survive and have a better life. I don't have anything against immigrants really either. I'm married to one. I know she is here legally and I know she pays her share of taxes because I am her sponsor. I have been to visit her home country of Taiwan and met her family and seen where she came from and believe me, while her family is not destitute, their standard of living is sure a far cry from what she has here now. But somehow she managed to get here without breaking any laws and she did so before ever having met me. It can be done. But how many people should we let in? How many CAN we let in? How much impoverished mass can the country support before it becomes that very thing that people came here to escape? With every illegal that sneaks across and leeches off this countries social services, it lowers the standard for EVERYBODY just a little bit more. I don't care how desperate you are, it doesn't give you the right to commit a crime without having to pay the consequences. The fact is, this country is being invaded. Just because the invaders don't come in riding in tanks and toting machine guns does not mean that the laws and sovereignty of our nation is not being trampled on. But it is our own fault.

We have catered to this behavior and looked the other way for far too long because it was convenient. But now we have seen, as with 9/11, that not everybody who comes here has good intention. We have put ourselves in a very sticky situation. What do we do? Go around deporting only middle-easterners and letting everybody else stay? I can already see the news headlines if we tried that. It is little wonder that illegal aliens get upset when suddenly we start labeling them as such when we have had our heads turned the other way for so long. But they also did it to themselves by knowingly violating the immigration laws of this country. Did they really think that eventually all of Mexico would be able to sneak across the border in the night and be absorbed unnoticed into the teeming masses of the US population? There is going to be a breaking point where due to ignorance and hatred or just plain economics (or a combination of both) where America cannot absorb any more tired, poor, huddled masses. Otherwise, what is the point of a border? Or if all of Mexico wants to become American's so badly, why doesn't America just invade and take over Mexico and declare it a part of the U.S.A? I bet a lot of those illegal immigrants to our country who call themselves Americans would take serious issue with that plan.

So I have no idea what to do about it. . .that's my input. We are in a mess of our own making for which there is no easy solution. They came, so we catered to them, so since we cater to them they keep coming. There is no solution to this problem I can forsee that will make everyone happy. If we have to take each case individually and weigh the hardship that would be endured by a potential deportee before making the decision, so be it. But something has to be done. We can't ignore our own laws any more. And those who are here illegally have had a free ride for far too long and they knew what they were doing when they snuck over. They knew the risk they were taking. They are our laws to enforce should we so choose, and I say we start enforcing them now. Don't let things get any worse than they already are. The longer we wait, the uglier this gets.

aww, looks like someone didnt get to buy their new car this year, or playstation, or get to eat like a pig. im glad there are so many immigrants coming here, maybe it will make americans feel more satisfied with what they already have, instead of complaining all the time. there is so much waste in this country that im glad someone is there to try to do whatever they can to get the scraps.

i wish we could kick out all those lazy bums that complain all the time about illegal immigrants because they've pretty much wasted their own lives, with no fault from any immigrant.
