Upgraded from a 50 inch Sony RPTV about 5 years old to a Sony 52 ich LCD 1080p.

WTF?

Its freakin awesome!

I though my old one was nice. However, when I picked up one of those Toshiba HD-DVD machines for 99.00 at WalMart a year or two back I couldn't see any difference.

Now I know why. The clarity on my new one is un-fusck-ingbelievable.

EDIT:
I just got my HDMI cables and replaced my component cables.
Wow. Again. It really made a difference!

Congrats. I know that feeling too. Just replaced my Sony SXRD XBR1 with the latest Panny plasma. The SXRD is still regarded today as having excellent PQ for a rear projection but still pales in comparison to the plasma after properly calibrating it. Every time I watch it I still say to myself, "Damn, that's a nice picture!"

Only problem is you still can't get a LCD or Plasma this big - 82"

Sure, I'll stick with my 100" Front Projection DLP in a light controlled room, but without that room, this would be tempting (if the price can drop a little)

Saw it and passed. I can see everything in the reflection off their high glare screen.
If I had a darker room, maybe.
For me, I am going to stick with Sony.

Though it's too bad I couldn't wait for the led models to come down in price.
In about 3-4 years someone may get a good deal on this Sony when I upgrade....

Next up, the blu-ray player.
Looking at the Sony BDP-S360 or the Panasonic DMP-BD80K.
From Newegg.
Unless I can Bing it for less.

I watched my first blu-ray 2 weeks ago and was almost unnerved at how clear the picture was. It was like you were right friggin' there in the middle of the movie.

It's either shens or he had the settings wrong with the component cables. If the component cables were passing 1080i from his HD-DVD player and his TV deinterlaces properly, then there would be no noticeable difference between component and HDMI. That is, unless he bought a Monster HDMI cable .

I had sprung for some pretty good quality component cables a couple of years ago. However, when I switched to the hdmi cables there really was a noticable difference.
Isn't it possible my t.v.'s internal processor is better than that of my cable box?

I don't know how your TV's internal processor would come into play in this. Your TV's processor will process any signal that's not 1080p. It's doubtful that your cable box transmits anything other than 720p or 1080i, which can both be passed through component and HDMI cables. Is your cable box the source that made the big improvement with the HDMI cables? If so, it's possible that your cable box passes a better digital signal than analog signal. With good equipment (i.e. not a cable box) there should be no noticeable difference between component and HDMI cables unless you're passing 1080p/60 or have the settings screwed up with one cable but not the other.

Yeah, it was thru the cable box. And even using the component cables when I set the cable box to pass thru the picture improves.

Ahhh...pass-through is the setting that made the improvement. That makes a lot more sense. What resolution did you have your cable box set to before? If you had it set to 1080i and watched a 720p channel (ESPN or ABC), then the picture would look much worse than just passing through the signal. However, since nothing's broadcast in 1080p, component cables should theoretically look just as good as HDMI. In fact, component cables can pass 1080p just fine, they just don't allow it for copy-protection reasons. I'm pretty sure other countries' devices allow 1080p via component cables.
